Kelly's Bionic Leg

Donation protected
This is a story everyone will want to be a part of as it does not happen everyday.  Please meet Kelly, a woman on a mission to overcome the setbacks she faces after surviving a stroke.  Kelly was an active, loving and community oriented 41 year old when she suffered a massive stroke from an undiagnosed genetic defect.  For most people, the story would stop there.  Not for this strong woman. Kelly has spent the past six years overcoming the paralysis she received on her left side.  She lives independently in her own home, has relearned how to cook, clean, bathe, drive and, for the most part, lives a fairly normal life for someone that experienced such strong setbacks from that night six years ago.

Kelly has many medical breakthroughs that have helped her get to the point where she is today, which brought freedom- the freedom to live on her own.

But, there is one setback…. while her left arm may never regain any function again, her leg has.  She currently wears a large plastic leg brace (called an AFO) in order to walk.  Her walk is timid and very frustrating as she can walk only on flat surfaces, and must use a cane or wheelchair. Her gait is uneven most of the time which leaves her somewhat unbalanced.  Determined to get the strength in her leg so that she could possibly walk with no help from a cane, walker or wheelchair, Kelly went back to the Shepherd’s Spinal Center to see how they might be able to help. Another one of her goals was to be able to wear different types of shoes instead of the same white tennis shoes she has worn for the past six years, as they are the only type of shoe that gives her AFO the support she needs to walk.

Low and behold two weeks ago the Shepherd Center had an option for Kelly that would allow her to walk straight again without assistance, and without having to exclusively wear those old white tennis shoes.  This miracle is called a Bioness L300.  We just call it a bionic leg!  The L300 is a small leg cuff (no more bulky AFO!) that produces electrical stimulation to activate and contract specific leg muscles while it stimulates the appropriate nerves and muscles of the leg to lift her foot and help her walk more naturally. This is something Kelly has not been able to do since her stroke!!  The video posted is Kelly walking with her “bionic leg”.  As much as this technology is a blessing, it comes with a cost that medical insurance will not cover.

This request is to send Kelly a miracle and allow her to carry on her mission to rehabilitate herself as much as possible, so she can continue to inspire other survivors as well as everyone around her to be everything Christ has planned for them.  The cost of her bionic leg and the therapy sessions to learn how to use it is $6500.

Would you be a part of this miracle in the making?  Support Kelly in gaining a new bionic leg.
