Kate's Adventure

We all have dreams. We wouldn’t be human without ambitions or desires. For the most part we achieve them, or at least try.

Hello! Thanks for visiting! As you saw in video my name is Kate. I’m 23, I live in the South of England, and I have just graduated from The University of Winchester with a BA (Hons) degree in Digital Media Design. Though my course has allowed me to learn a variety of digital media areas, my specialty is photography and digital art. It is my hope now I have graduated to set myself up in business selling my work. This not the dream though. My dream is to travel across the illustrious country of America…

The solution is simple, right? Get a job, save up, and hop on a flight. Then back-pack across America using hostels and Airbnb…  Simple! Oh how I wish it were so. I have a condition called Congenital Muscular Dystrophy. This condition severely weakens the muscles meaning I am reliant on an electric wheelchair to get around and require 24/7 care and medical support to live my daily life. Though my disability effects most things in my life, I try for it not to get in the way of anything I want to achieve. I love seeing things live, whether it be comedy, theatre or music. I have a wonderful, amazing family who are incredibly supportive and friends who are equally so. I am very lucky. Having all this in my life has given me the attitude that anything is possible. It is with this mentality that I’m approaching America.

America has always been an interest of mine. I remember first wanting to go to America after I saw ‘Friends’ for the first time way back when I was 11! Our own culture in recent years has been influenced by America and I would love to experience the true American culture first hand. Also I suppose because America is so vast, with many places to take stunning photographs, is what gives some of its appeal to me. Similarly, as I’m interested in digital media, where better to visit in the world than the home of Silicon Valley and many film studios?

It is not only about the photography opportunities or seeing where technology and films are produced that has given me this desire to go to America though. The big reason why I want to go to America is to just see another corner of this earth.

I have done a fair amount of research and I truly believe that it is possible to get me to and across America. My wish is to visit New York City and road trip it to Los Angeles. However, due to my condition and all the extra support I need for it, I estimate that the entire trip will cost, for myself and two carers, around £40,000. I can honestly say that even getting a job and saving every penny I earn I’m never going to get that amount of money. Therefore I’m on a mission to raise the money where I can.

Now, please let me make this clear, I’m not trying to pull an X Factor sob story… It has taken me a while to come to terms with the fact that I need to ask for financial help if I’m ever going to get to America. So I have decided that I’m going to use this experience as a way of promoting disability, disability travel and to give inspiration to young people in a similar situation to me to go and achieve their dreams, no matter what those dreams are. I will be doing this via a Facebook page, Twitter, YouTube and a blog. I’ll use the social media to share the fundraising progress, my planning and then once I get to America, I’ll use them as a way of sharing my adventure.

Please give what you can and invest in a dream that wants to give back! If you donate £50 you will receive an exclusive digital signed photograph from my trip.

I really want to encourage people to pursue their dreams; life is too short not to. Follow my progress with my social media links:
