Karen Nelson, the blonde-haired, blue-eyed gal in the picture, is a beautiful human being. She is a loving mother, dedicated teacher and inspiring friend. Her job as campus security at a local high school has helped inspire teens to be healthy, whole people. Karen has been given awards for her efforts at the high school, including having the student body to dedicate the 2010 year book to her. In addition to working at the high school, she works full time at a local restaurant. This supplemental income allows Karen to support her mother and two children who currently reside in her home. The restaurant is where I first met her and she has been a light and an inspiration to me.

On July 16th, as Karen was walking home after her shift, an individual came out of the darkness and asked her for spare cash. She gave the man her wallet and told him to take however much he wanted. He took only $2 and shoved her off the road into a culvert. Karen landed stunned and in pain at the bottom of the six foot drop. Fearing for her life, she hid inside the drainage pipe hoping that the man would not come back and further harm her. Karen lie there from 10:30 pm 'til dawn, cold, alone and in extreme pain. At first light, she believed she was safe and decided to attempt getting out of the ditch. Pushing herself up from the mud and bushes, she became aware of the injuries she had sustained: 3 broken ribs, a broken humerus, and a shattered rotator cuff. Knowing she must get help, Karen pulled herself up out of the ditch using the one arm that was still functioning and her legs to push. Once on the road she began walking to find help. To her relief, an elderly man was in the parking lot near her and agreed to drive her home.

Since July 16th, Karen has been put on bed rest. No work for the next two months at least. Surgery on her rotator cuff was scheduled for the 28th of July. The money we raise here will help pay for her medical and monthly bills as well as assist in recouping the wages she will not earn while not working. According to the doctors, it will take 1 to 1 1/2 months to heal from the medical procedures she must have completed. Physical healing aside, it could take much longer to heal from the trauma of such a horrible ordeal. Please join me in supporting Karen by contributing what you are able. Your thoughts, prayers and encouragement are coveted by her and her family at this time. All your support will be in aid of this tremendous, courageous woman.

Thank you so much for your support!
