Kalyn's Fight Cancer fund

In the spring of 2014, a woman that had never met before let me and my 2 children move into her home. I stayed there for 4 months and was unable to pay her anything until after I moved out. She gave her home and her son’s bedroom to a stranger in need. She is my angel. And now, my angel needs help. Her name is Kalyn; she is a 39-year-old single mother with terminal cancer. She has 3 types of cancer and her medical expenses are eating her alive. Her need is urgent. She never asks for help and gives to everyone. She called me today in tears and scared to death she will lose her home and her son. I am asking for help for her on her behalf. Please donate what you can for this earth bound angel.

My name is Kalyn Blacklock and I am a 39-year-old mom, entrepreneur and fitness enthusiast.

My story is different than most…

I was diagnosed with Chiari Malformation Type 2 (a neurological brain disorder that in layman’s terms causes your brain to swell and drain into your spinal cord and suffocate) on October 6, 2005, 5 months after my son Kyan was born.  For 5 months I was told my symptoms were caused by my hormone changes and they would pass. On my son’s 5-month check up I walked out of his doctor’s office and I collapsed, dropping him on the ground. My legs had decided that they no longer wanted to work.

I was rushed to the hospital and after many hours and lots of back an forth with the GP and nurses they finally got me calmed down, legs working, son soothed and put me in touch with a neurologist that actually liked to read medical studies. He was able to correctly diagnose me with Chiari Malformation. Two weeks later I was getting a decompression surgery.

Unfortunately, I was still one of the first cases in adults, so finding an experienced neurosurgeon was not an option. My decompression surgery saved my life…but my doctor was over zealous and removed too much of my lower cranium and my entire C1 and C2 vertebrae. So I was left still with a “bobble head”, severe headaches and my skull caved in to the point where I could put my entire fist into my skull. Cool
party trick but hard to live that way.

But I did…for 2.5 years. Then my sister, Angela, was watching a TV show and it had a Chiari survivor on it and it talked about The Chiari Institute in NY. I had given up on getting better because my doctors told me it was my imagination and the decompression was a success. But thanks to Angela, I got in touch with the institute, sent them all my records and within 3 days they were calling me and telling me that I needed to go to NY ASAP or I could be paralyzed or worse.

So I went…and they are incredible! After 2 days of every test imaginable I was notified that I needed 2-3 more brain surgeries and my Tethered Cord was partially severed. Long story short, I had another brain surgery and my spine repaired. I still have more work to do, but unfortunately I’ve been cursed with bad genes and was hit with another medical condition…Ovarian Cancer...so that has unfortunately made the additional surgeries unnecessary, my Chiari is no longer operable.

I was diagnosed with Ovarian Cancer in May of 2011…I had a hysterectomy in Feb of 2012 and had my last chemo treatment the beginning of July, and hit remission status on July 14th. On September 27, 2012 I was diagnosed with Hodgkin’s Lymphoma and started up chemo again on Oct. 3…3 days before I ran the Tough Mudder.

However, chemo is a terrible poison and does a lot of naughty things to your system…such as causing the brain to swell and herniate. Because this was already
an issue, it escalated my condition to terminal standing with a 4 yr timeline.

As if that was not enough, on October 16th, on my 36th birthday, the doctors discover that my cancer had metastasized into Bone Marrow Cancer stage IV.

During all of this I discovered the benefits of eating right and working out. When I first got into fitness, I was going through chemo with Ovarian Cancer, in tons of pain and just wanting to be as physically strong as I was mentally. The mixture of learning how to weight lift, eat correctly and my overall determination to kick my own butt on a daily basis…I got to where I am today…retired NPC Figure Competitor and Posing Coach to current competitors and future Pros.

Today, my brain is still seeping, the pain is still there, I’m still fighting cancer…. Unfortunately, at this time in my life, I have a lot of ailments and the treatments and diet regiment are very expensive and all out of network.

Mind over matter….the love of Christ…a strict cancer fighting diet…and the love and support of our friends and family have helped me to be the fighter, competitor, business woman and warrior that I am today. I want to let people know that a healthy life style and trusting in God makes a difference…no matter who you are or what your ailment is.
