Selma Comes To Oakdale

I'm raising funds to set up a private screening of the movie Selma for the youth of Oakdale, Louisiana. No theater for 45 miles? No problem! With Paramount's blessing, I'm bringing the movie to the town and setting up a temporary movie viewing experience!
After seeing Ava DuVernay's timely, heartbreaking, and beautiful film Selma, I am compelled to share the experience with as many young people as possible.
Please join me in my attempt to gift the students of my alma mater, Oakdale High School (and if we can pull it off, some from the middle school too!), with a screening of this film in their town.
Selma tells the story of a 1965 voting rights campaign in Selma, Alabama, where African-Americans were systematically deprived of the right to vote. This time period in our country's history is often summarized in school textbooks in a way that can never capture the true essence and gravity of the experiences. If you are lucky, like I was growing up, you have elders in your community who volunteer their personal time to teach this history off the books. Most people are not.
This fundraiser is my effort to 1) support the very community that gave me an appreciation for this piece of American history 2) introduce as many young people as possible to information that has the potential to unite people through shared understanding of what the country, and African Americans in particular, have endured, and 3) support art I believe in when it has been put forth.
