Author rides bike across America to advocate for children worldwide

An author of a children’s book will begin a Colorado-to-Washington DC bicycle ride in Vail, Colorado on April 20, to advocate about the World Summit for Children and the idea we share just one planet.

This isn’t new territory for Shad Finney – in 1991, when he was 21, the Denver, Colorado man completed a walk across the U.S. along the same route in support of the World Summit for Children. That jaunt took five months and covered 3,000 miles.

Now, Shad’s back on the road, having written a book entitled, “Just One Planet.” Inspired by the song, “We Share Just One Planet” Sarah Stevens and Catharine Marchese wrote and performed the song with 300 students in response of the 9/11 tragedy, the book makes an effort to restore and take part in the process of healing. It spreads the message that we’re sisters, we’re brothers, we’re neighbors, we all are friends, we all are one human family, from the beginning to the end.

The performance, in response of the tragedy of 9/11, prompted Finney to create a national day (every September 12th is now Just One Human Family Day) to remind people of their connection.

“My hopes are perhaps in the future that all schools around the country and perhaps the world sings the song on Just One Human Family Day as a process of healing and sharing possibility,” Finney said.

Proceeds from the book will be used by the charitable relief agency, Neighbors in Humanity to buy vaccines, food, water, and provide other medical facilities to at risk children.

“I hope to raise awareness and enlist a proactive response from people who can help and share the message from my book in a humanitarian way,” Shad said.

It’s necessary to raise awareness, he added, because most people don’t realize that, around the globe, vulnerable children are facing threats to their lives on a scale we've never seen before:

• 50 million children are currently on the move, fleeing war, violence and poverty
• 2.4 million children are on the brink of starvation in South Sudan, Somalia, Nigeria and Yemen
• After six brutal years of war, many Syrian children have never lived a day in peace
• 16,000 children under age five die every single day from mostly preventable causes

This trek will include a stop in Washington, DC, to reach out to policy makers who, Shad said, most need to hear his message.

F.Y.I   Approximately $7 dollars from each pre-order goes to Neighbors in Humanity. If the goal of 1000 pre-orders is achieved seven thousand dollars will go toward helping the statistics listed above as a example of sharing the planet. I am Shad Finney the founder of Neighbors in Humanity Inc. I started neighbors in Humanity so I donate the profits from my book Just One Planet to a cause that reflect sharing the planet. I also started Just One Human Family Day, the national day will be announced September 12, 2018.
