Meaningful Day Program coming soon to Cape Coral
The Start:
It all started on March 31, 1995 when a beautiful little girl came into my life. Without question she touched the lives of everyone that met her, but most of all she changed mine forever. Ashley was born with Down syndrome and a congenital heart defect called, Atrioventricular Septal Defect.
Being the eldest sibling of three, I quickly jumped at the chance to be the protector. It hasn't always been easy, and you parents and siblings know it never is. In the end it has been worth it all. I have had a career that has spanned many different avenues, landing in the non-profit field running a non-profit that provided services to adults and children with intellectual and developmental disabilities in the Washington, DC metro area. After a life altering moment, I realized I needed to be closer to my family in Florida.

I quickly realized that there are very few services offered in the part of Florida that my parents reside in. Seeing the need for local services first hand, I realized there were two choices. 1. I could continue to complain about the lack of services or 2. Do something about it. With amazing people and a phenomenal mentor around me, I present to you Friends Like You Incorporated better known as FLY.
FLY is a licensed private non-for-profit in the state of Florida. Currently FLY is in the waiting pattern for our 501©3, but by IRS regulations during this waiting period we are authorized to run as a 501©3 until our approval.

Friends Like You Inc. has announced the launch of the Meaningful Day Program coming soon to Cape Coral. FRIENDS LIKE YOU, Inc. (FLY) is committed to promoting opportunities for all people with developmental disabilities. FLY's innovative services provide work readiness training and create meaningful employment opportunities through education and integrated community partnerships.
Filling the Void
There is an employment void for the developmentally disabled. Only 31% of the developmentally disabled are working which represents a large untapped labor pool that is inhibited in its community inclusiveness and sustained inclusion. FLY- whose mission is to help individuals with developmental disabilities achieve independence, productivity, integration, and inclusion into the community- plans to open its doors to satisfy this critical void.
FLY is run by Cape Coral-based families with a heavy personal involvement in the disabilities community that understand the value of creating a safe, nurturing, and non-limiting environment.

Availability in Cape Coral
FLY's Meaningful Day Program will be available for adults with developmental disabilities Monday through Friday, 8 am to 2 pm.
Our after school program will be available Monday through Friday from 2 pm to 6 pm with fun and educational activities that are designed for individuals with special needs, ages 9 to 17. Program will include basketball, dance, drama, computer training, homework club, academic tutorials, and youth councils. Program offers participants a challenging range of activities to improve coordination, attention, and self-esteem.
