Kitasoo School Jr High Field Trip

Post-Secondary Field Trip

Kitasoo Community School is a small school located in the heart of BC's Great Bear Rainforest in the traditional territory of the Kitasoo/Xai'Xais First Nation - a beautiful and very remote part of the north coast.

In May 2015, our 11 junior high students will travel south to Nanaimo and Vancouver to visit the University of British Columbia (UBC), Vancouver Island University (VIU), and Simon Fraser University (SFU) to learn about the programs these schools offer and the post-secondary supports available to them as First Nations students. They'll also have the chance to visit get valuable educational experiences at museums and science centres.

Given our remote location (we're a 12 hour ferry ride from the northern tip of Vancouver Island), this trip is a rare and very special opportunity for our students to enrich their educational experience and to explore post-secondary options.

This trip is an enormous undertaking - students are working incredibly hard to fundraise enough money to cover costs of travel, accommodations, admissions, meals, and other trip expenses. They've also made a promise to prove they deserve this trip through a commitment to their school work.

Our home community has been very generous in its support of these kids - but we need your help. This special trip offers our students the chance to add to their education now, plan for their future, and to take part in extra-curricular activities that aren't normally available to them.

As their teacher I can tell you what an great opportunity this is for a very deserving bunch of students. But I can also let them tell you what this trip means to them in their own words. Please read what they have to say, and consider supporting these hard-working kids.

Student Testimonials

Grade 8:
"My favourite subject in school is Math. My goal at the moment is to raise enough money to go on this trip to Vancouver(or raise a bit extra). When schooling is done my goal is to get a good paying job, go to school, and enjoy life. I am a very determined person and I am very ready for this Vancouver trip. My class lives in a very remote place and there is only two ways to get out of the community(by boat and  by plane).

Do you want to know what my biggest, biggest dream is to do in my life? My dream is to travel the world and help other people who are less fortunate, and also to encourage others to do better. This trip can give my classmates an ability to see what the world can offer. This trip would also help me with loving life.

Just for your information we have already fundraised and have made a few thousand dollars. Our overall money goal is to raise between 10-12 thousand dollars. All money raised on this website goes toward our school trip. Right now I would do the honour of asking you to donate money to our school field trip (an actual field trip far, far away!). Please click the donate button somewhere close to these words. It would really mean a lot to my class, my teacher and me.

I would just like to thank you for all you have done in this world, and also for donating to my classroom. I would like to thank you for your time and reading these words- it really means a lot to me. This would really help my class in a lot of things."

Grade 6:
"This is why I want to go to Vancouver.

Well, the first and most important thing (I think) is that we will visit the variety of universities that Vancouver has to offer. I am extremely enthusiastic about this because in my lifetime I plan to earn two PhD's. So I want to know what resources I have available to me and also what educational and career choices I have available to me.

Another reason I want to go to Vancouver is to see exactly what each university has to offer, for example: the dorms, class rooms, technology, cafeteria, size, entertainment, and the gym. The universities we will visit are: SFU, UBC, VIU.

We can also enjoy the various entertainment options Vancouver has to offe.

So, I ask that anyone that reads this text and can spare a few dollars would please donate to us so we can go on this wonderful trip to Vancouver. Thank you for your generosity!"

Grade 7:
"I live in Klemtu BC. It is a very small place. My hobbies are sports: basketball, soccer and hockey. My favorite subject is P.E, and language and culture. My other hobbies are fishing, watching Netflix and playing video games.

The trip is important to me because it helps me plan for the future. It helps me  think of which college/university I would like to go to. It would help me with my decision of  how big I want  the campuses to be and if they have what I'd like to study. It gives me a thought of where I’d like to live in the city.  It also helps me think of how I’d be in the city alone. My goals are to graduate from high school and university and get a really good job. One that I am good at and is good paying.

Please donate money all you have to do is click the donate button. All your donations go towards the trip. The fundraising we've already done is bake sales, movie night and loonie actions. I’d like to thank you for your time and donation and for helping us out a lot."

Grade 8:
"I live in a small place called Klemtu, and I’m in grade 8. My goals are to pass school, get good grades in school, and go to a good college. My hobbies are to play basketball, and hang out with my friends. My favourite subjects are math, reading, writing, and culture.

The trip is important because I want to see what there is for me in the future, and I’ve never been to to any colleges or universities. Even if it’s just for a visit.

I want to know where all the good schools are. I really want to see the ladies' basketball teams at the universities, see how it is to get around the campus, and see what kind of classes and different courses they have so I can think of what I want to do in the future.

When you donate money it goes straight towards our trip. Thank you for your time, and thank you for your donation."

Grade 6:
"My hobbies are gymnastics, baking, and learning how to dance. My goal is to go on Canada's Got Talent. Me and my friend at school are going to try make a showlike America's Got Talent, but for Canada.

We are going to go to Vancouver in May to see what kind of colleges and universities we can go to.  This trip is important to me because I could learn about their art programs.

We’ll get to visit SFU, UBC, VIU and we will be seeing the classrooms, the gym, technology, and the cafeteria.

We could ask current students questions about how it is like to be in the colleges and universities.

We could learn how to get into the programs i’m interested in like visual art, music, and science labs.

I’m really excited about this trip, so could you please consider donating money to our trip fund? Thank you for reading and donating money." - Grade 6

Grade 8:
"I live in Klemtu, British Columbia. My hobbies are basketball and soccer, and I like to play video games. My favourite subjects are Language and Culture and P.E.

The trip is important to me because we never do any big trips and this is our chance! It would give me a idea of what university I would like to go. It would also be a lot of fun because in Vancouver we are going to go to Stanley Park, the Aquarium, and maybe a movie if we can get enough money.

If you can, will you please donate some money? All you have to do is click the button. All the money goes to the trip. We have already done some fundraising ourselves but unfortunately its not enough to let us all go yet.

Thank you so much for your time and your donations."
