Throughout his life John has had 3 hard working careers. He enrolled in the Royal Navy upon leaving school and completed arduous military training in the late 70s, proudly qualifying as a Submariner and for 11 years performed admirably in his duties following the engineering trade.
Whilst training in Scotland, he met Dawn, who he would go on to marry, and joined the Scottish prison service where he served for 18 years. Following an accident which hindered his work, he left the prison service; worked hard to recover, both mentally and physically, then found new enjoyment in passing on his knowledge by lecturing within the Edinburgh college's. John taught theoretical and practical engineering to apprentices for 10 years and was highly respected and liked by all due to his teaching methods and warm hearted nature at work.
Throughout all of the above he has been a devoted husband, loyal friend and a fantastic father providing a loving home and constant support for his wife in her difficult nursing role and two children. Family mean everything and being able to walk his daughter down the aisle last September was one of the proudest moments of his life.
Dawn and John have been travelling to the Costa Blanca North for the past six years, gradually spending longer periods here, after falling in love with the area, lifestyle and making many new friends both Spanish and British.
After both retiring from hard working careers last year they thoroughly looked forward to spending time with their many friends in Spain, and started to enjoy their hobbies and interests.
John's passion was cycling and this was heightened by his time cycling with friends both Spanish and British in a country where he cycled incredible lengths to embrace the views and culture. He especially loved his Sunday cycle with the Benissa boys.
On Thursday the 4th of May, one day before he was due to return to Scotland to visit family, John and a few friends went for a cycle on the road to Pedreguer from Alcalali. A fellow cyclist unfortunately hit a raised tree root in the road surface causing him to fall off into John’s path.
John was unable to avoid him and was thrown from his bike causing him to go over the handlebars and landing in such a way which caused his neck to be broken in two cervical areas. After being stabilised at the roadside he was transferred to Denia local hospital and was not expected to survive the end of the day. Notwithstanding his character and strength, John was able to fight his battle for life which continues to this day.
Due to the severity of the spinal injury which has resulted in paralysis from the neck down, he was transferred to the La Ribera hospital in Alzira to undergo further life-saving treatment.
John still remains in critical condition within the intensive care unit on a variety of life support machines requiring 24 hour care. The injury is compounded by inability to communicate due to a tracheotomy removing vocal ability, the paralysis and the language barriers. The medical team at this stage are unable to give any clear indication of John’s future prognosis.
Whilst delighted with the specialist care John has received at La Ribera, the whole family are keen to return him to Scotland to a specialist spinal unit to begin any form of future stabilisation and recovery, both mentally and physically with all close family there to support.
Unfortunately due to John’s injuries the only means of transferring him back home to Scotland is via a private air ambulance service requiring both a doctor and nurse present at all times with specialist equipment to ensure he can survive the journey and the cost of this is likely to be very high.
We are raising the money for the air ambulance with a doctor on board (€19,000), and ongoing costs of medical items, such as a motorised wheelchair.

Alba y Juan han estado viajando a Costa Blanca North durante los últimos seis años gasto gradualmente períodos más largos aquí después de enamorarse de la zona, estilo de vida y hacer muchos nuevos amigos españoles y británicos.

Pasión de Juan era ciclismo y esto fue acentuado por su tiempo ciclismo con amigos españoles y británicos en un país donde él ciclo de longitudes increíbles para abrazar la vistas y la cultura. Sobre todo amaba a su ciclo de domingo con los chicos de Benissa.
El jueves 4 de mayo, un día antes de que fue debido a volver a Escocia para visitar familia, Juan y unos amigos fueron para un ciclo en el camino a Pedreguer de Alcalalí. Un compañero ciclista por desgracia golpeó una raíz de árbol levantado en la superficie de la carretera causando que caiga en el camino de John.
John no pudo evitarlo y fue arrojado de su bicicleta que le causó a ir sobre el manillar y el aterrizaje de tal manera que su cuello roto en dos áreas cervicales. Después de ser estabilizado en la carretera fue trasladado al hospital local de Denia y no esperaba sobrevivir al final del día. A pesar de su carácter y fuerza, John fue capaz de luchar su batalla por la vida que continúa a este día.
Debido a la gravedad de la lesión en la columna que ha dado lugar a parálisis del cuello hacia abajo, fue trasladado al hospital de La Ribera en Alzira para someterse a más tratamiento.
