Medical Assistance for Jody Paul
Donation protected
Jody Paul, Hanshi, is a world renowned practitioner of classical Okinawan Karate and Kobudo. A student of Toma Shian, Uehara Seikichi, and Odo Seikichi, Paul Hanshi was amongst the earliest Westerners to study karate on Okinawa itself. Paul Sensei was one of very few Western students every accepted by Uehara Sensei and has worked diligently for decades to preserve the arts of his teachers.
In addition to his martial arts career, Paul Sensei is a military veteran with the United States Navy.
Sadly, in August of 2014, Jody Paul was involved in a devastating car accident. Paul Hanshi experienced serious injury to his spinal cord, leaving him paralyzed from the neck down. Paul Sensei has been going through a series of surgeries to minimize the damage and provide him with the best chance for health and recovery.
Friends and family are currently organizing long-term care for Mr. Paul, hoping to access Veteran’s Assistance. However, given the severity of his injuries, a significant amount of medical equipment and care will be needed.

This fundraiser is designed to provide Paul Hanshi with high quality equipment that may aid in his comfort and recovery. Due to his paralysis he will need specialized physical therapy devices and bed technology so as to reduce atrophy, blood clotting, and bed sores. In addition, we hope to secure communication technology that will allow Paul Hanshi to communicate easily, either through visual-aided-computers or speech enhancement.
It is our long term goal to stabilize Paul Hanshi and provide him with the quality of life he has earned through decades of personal sacrifice. While we are unsure if he will ever walk again, we wish to see him once again put on a gi and share his wisdom.
If you can, please donate to this cause and bolster Jody Paul Hanshi’s chances for health, comfort, and recovery.
