Coalfield Assistance-Job Retraining

The Foundation For Appalachian Advancement is raising money for its Coalfield Assistance Program (CAP). With the changing of our nation's energy sources as we move to energy independence, coal is being relied upon less and less.
In many communities accross Appalachia there are counties and towns that are dependent up coal mining jobs for their livlihood. Massive layoffs in the industry has impacted many of those economically distressed communities. In many cases, those communities do not have the economic diversification needed for those out of work to move to other good paying jobs. And many of the families that relied on the industry to pay the rent/mortgage, send their kids to school, and to pay the necessities have found themselves in a rough spot.
The Coalfield Assistance Program is designed to help those out of work miners transition into other good paying jobs that are needed in their communites. We are raising funds for vocational training costs for those that cannot afford the cost of job retraining. Although there is a significant amount of grant money available for degree programs at community colleges and universities, there is a lack of funding for certificate training/vocational training such as for welding, electrician, plumbing, etc...jobs that are needed in many of these communities that lack diversification.
This program is designed for those that are out of work in the industry that need the assistance, not those that have the means to easily afford it on their own. It is the Foundation's goal to raise $65,000 for job retraining.
