Hello, my name is Haley Steinkamp and I am a sophomore in High School. This year I had the wonderful opportunity of joining a great program at school. Family Career and Community Leaders of America ( FCCLA), an organization that brings young people together to think about what is happening in their neighborhood and community. I have been inspired to help other during what could be the most difficult time of their lives, and FCCLA has provided me with the opportunity to pursue something that I am passionate about.
Each year many children are forced to evacuate their homes due to fire or other health and safety risks. They are often left with only what they are wearing and the trauma of the event. For this reason I am looking to provide some comfort in the most simple of ways, a bag containing a few basic items. A comfort pack of sorts; each pack containing a tie blanket, toothbrush, toothpaste, a comb/hair brush, warm socks, and a gift card to a local department store to purchase a new outfit. A house fire is not something that happens to just the poor or the rich, the black or white, yet people always think it will never happen to them. It is not something that anyone is prepared for, yet alone a child.
My goal is to assemble no less than 50 comfort packs to be distributed to five local fire departments (10 per department) so they may be provided at the time of most need. Each comfort pack has a total cost of approximately $25.00 for the items and an additional $25.00 gift card for the purchase of personal essentials. The total projected project cost to attain my goal is $2,500.00. With your help, and the help of others in our community I believe this goal is very attainable, with the potential to be exceeded and comfort to be provided to many more children in our community. Any donation that can be provided to support this goal is greatly appreciated; every dollar that is donated will go directly to the purchase of the bags and items to fill them.
I would like to be the one that starts the healing process and make it so the children going through traumatic times have something that is theirs, something to provide some comfort. I have hope that I will change many people’s lives through this opportunity.
