This page is in support of the only Junior Community Problem Solving team representing California in the Future Problem Solving International Program . Seven kids. Each has his or her own story about why they want to help other kids. Each has his or her own gifts to offer to the Community Problem Solving project they are pursuing together.
One team member is a survivor of childhood leukemia and had hidden her history from her peers until embarking upon the journey of this project. Now she and her equally-invested cohorts are enacting their plan to heal loneliness in and show love to child cancer patients at Loma Linda Childrens' Hospital.
The 5th grade Community Problem Solving (CmPS) team supported by this page is on a mission. Their goal is to bring smiles of joy to the faces of kids with cancer.
How?
The CmPS team wishes to compile themed care packages to deliver to young Loma Linda patients based on an interest survey linked to the team website. A dinosaur-themed package, for example, may include loomed dinosaur figures made by the school community. ("We have some expert loomers in our class," boasted one team member.) Another item in the package may be a dinosaur book. A dinosaur toy might also be included. Since the CmPS team members aren't allowed to visit patients due to contagion concerns, they plan to attach unique notes containing QR Codes to the carefully selected contents of each care package. For example, a toy dinosaur for the dinosaur-lover might come with a tag that, when scanned using a smart phone, activates a video in which one of the CmPS team members suggests the brontosaurus be placed near the recipient's pillow, explaining that it is there to scare away nightmares.
Another facet of the student-created action plan involves rallying the entire school. In efforts to raise money to be donated to Loma Linda Children's Hospital, the service group will begin a school-wide read-a-thon. They hope to award top readers at each grade level with prizes and implement a system in which "Book Bucks" can be earned based on hours read. The CmPS team will host an auction filled with prizes for sponsored readers to buy using their Book Bucks.
While the CmPS team's main goal is to be of service, financial support is needed to see them to two competitions. First, the California Future Problem Solving State Bowl to be held near San Francisco in April will allow the CmPS students to debut their project. This will be followed in June by the Future Problem Solving International Conference at Iowa State University. Our team, representing California, will compete by participating in interviews; manning an elaborate project display board during the CmPS Fair; and showing their Public Service Announcement video, scrapbook of the journey of the project, and involved final report to community members and judges.
Funding travel expenses and related costs so that all seven kids can compete with their heartfelt project is the reason for establishing this page. We call upon your generosity and are truly grateful for donations of any amount to support these special students as they endeavor to better the world.
