YouTube is so out there, so in the public eye, that we often take it for granted. Whilst mainstream celebrity is something we have grown used to, this new brand of star is something which seems to close yet so far. A quick google search can provide you with hundreds of celebrity documentaries, studies, books; but its rare to find a look in at the YouTube community.
Over the past year, I have been involved closely with creators on the platform and have gained an inside look into the blood, sweat and tears involved with making a living being a social media star. From speaking to both sides of the community- fans and stars alike- it is clear that there is a sense of ambiguity surrounding life on Youtube, despite the seemingly personal nature of the content. With this film, I will be working closely with creators both big and small, to bring light to this elusive work and communicate what life is really like on the small screen.
Why do we need you?
As a small, up and coming production team it is almost impossible to get our ideas flying. This is a project we are all passionate about, and one which we feel can not only bring an exclusive insight into your favorite creators, but also help bring the community closer and give our YouTube stars a chance to explain what their lives are really like behind the camera.
Where will your donations go?
Donating to this film will not only enable us to hire equipment and software, but will also greatly increase the range of online celebrities we are able to talk to. In an ideal world, we want to widen our cameras to your favorite personalities from Europe and the US, however travel costs mean we cant do that without your help. This is a big project, and we want to do it right and to the fullest we can. Your donations mean that we can not only get the best equipment available to us but also give everyone a chance to be involved.
Why this project?
Film is my life. I have been studying for three years and working on making my first feature for two, with the hope that someday I can create something important and give back to the world. I have seen first-hand how demoralizing, addictive and exhausting a life online can be and I want to bring fans and creators closer together by giving creators a chance to show how much they work for their career. The mainstream media paints YouTubers as fantastically rich, living the life of luxury and putting little effort in and I know this not to be the case. It is unfair and unjust that nobody is looking behind the camera and I feel that this is something we all need to be a part of. As a small producer, trying to make a name for myself I implore you to be a part of this production and help us create something worthwhile.
When do we need the funds by?
Ideally, this project needs to be off the ground as soon as possible as I am still studying in my final year and want to begin working on something that matters before what little support network I have disappears for good.
