In Remembrance of Tom Ortner

A lifelong surfer, Tom Ortner was an icon of the Windansea beach community of La Jolla and his talent in the water inspired countless surfers over many generations.   It was impossible not to stop and take notice when Tom was  riding a wave with his trademark smooth style and masterful technique.   Tom graced the waters of La Jolla since the early 1960's with an unmistakable presence.  In tributes, his friends have spoken of his quiet demeanor and humble behavior.  

Tom moved to La Jolla from Chicago at the age of 5 and developed a love of the ocean immediately.  Tom Ortner had been battling cancer for the past 3 years.  Unfortunately he lost his life on May 24, 2019.  

Tom had been unable to perform his work as a general contractor for the last three years due to the difficulties of the disease and chemotherapy treatments.  His wife Susan has been his sole caregiver taking loving care of Tom during this difficult time.   As such, Susan is experiencing financial hardship.  She needs help with Tom's final expenses and to help put his affairs in order.  Please consider helping Susan as she navigates this tragedy and moves forward in life without him.
