Help us tell the stories of San Juan County's historic barns and engage the community to preserve them.
The Goal:
A barn survey was the first step; sharing their stories is the next step. Our goal is to save and preserve the iconic barns and farm buildings still standing throughout the islands of San Juan County, Washington.
The barns of San Juan County are a visual testimony to the rich history of island farming and the people who settled the archipelago.
1860s to Today
San Juan County barns are a varied lot. In age, the earliest examples date from the mid-1860s, some of the oldest surviving barns in Washington State.
Historic barns are among the largest structures in the islands--they are the monuments of the rural landscape and are treasured by residents and visitors alike.
100 Friends of Old Island Barns
The Hundred Friends of Old Island Barns is a working group made up of island residents, barn owners, advocates, neighbors, and barn enthusiasts. We have no paid staff or organizational expenses other than expenses related to outreach activities. Contributions from barn supporters, occasional small grants, volunteers, and a partnership with the Washington Trust for Historic Preservation make it possible for the Friends to do our work without the organizational overhead of a typical 501(c)(3).
County Barn Survey
Thanks to a San Juan County Historic Documents Fund grant in 2008, the 100 Friends of Old Island Barns conducted a comprehensive survey of the county's 120 historic barns. The survey lead to important relationships with barn owners past and present. We continue to provide assistance on rehabilitation and other preservation strategies.
Help Save Barns! We have more to do, and we need your help.
Our current special projects include:
1. Finishing the website. We need additional support to complete and maintain our new website/archive, Historic Barns of San Juan County; and
2. Designing an interactive map. We are in the planning stages for an interactive map with barn photos and narratives for each island in the archipelago where barns have been identified and surveyed.
Why?
The website is the archive for data collected as part of a field survey conducted in 2007. We have identified and documented over 140 historic barns and farm buildings throughout San Juan County. Using the Web to archive information provides universal and free public access to photographs, stories, architectural design, barn rehab information, and on-going barn preservation efforts by the 100 Friends. It is also an effective way to gather historical information from barn owners and island residents, as well as for communicating with the broader community about barns.
The Historic Barns of San Juan County virtual archive project ensures that the information is available to a broad audience for years to come, without the expense of a brick and mortar facility and other organizational expenses.
Project Timeframe
Our current goal is to fund the site and continue content development through 2020. With your help, we will raise funds to do all this and more.
