Nepal Earthquake Relief Fund

Our story:

We are appealing to friends, faculty, staff and families of Bard and the Hudson Valley to help Nepal through this difficult time. This is an initiative led by the  current and past Nepali students of Bard.

On April 25th, a devastating earthquake of 7.8 on the Richter scale hit Nepal. Four days after the disaster, Nepal is still suffering from major aftershocks of up to 6.8 on the Richter scale. The country has suffered an invaluable loss of lives, infrastructure and national heritage. The official death toll has now risen to over 5000 lives.

Over the past few days, Nepal has received a tremendous amount of support and humanitarian aid for immediate relief efforts. However, it will take continued effort to support the Nepali society. There will be increasing medical needs, scarcity of essential supplies, and a massive operation to rebuild infrastructure. We started this initiative as Bard students keeping in mind that we can help the affected people in a more coordinated and sustained way, where we try to meet both their immediate and long term relief requirements.

The majority of the people who are affected by the earthquake are scattered in remote, rural areas. Due to Nepal’s rough terrain and resource constraints, it has been difficult to access and provide to these areas. Heavy rain in the days after the disaster has hampered rescue efforts and mobility. We have remained in constant touch with friends and family in Nepal to identify organizations that have been most active on the ground and are effectively reaching out to these remote areas. While all funds, through whatever means, are eventually going for the betterment of the people, we want to be proactive and donate in a more responsible way where we know for sure that the funds will be channeled in the most effective manner to places that need it most.

We will utilize the funds in two phases. Your donations will make an immediate impact through donations to the American Red Cross and OXFAM, who are on site and actively reaching out to the affected population. Since Nepal will need continual support of funds, we will also save funds to allocate later to organizations addressing more structural issues, such as in the rebuilding process. We want to support grassroot organisations that have a good grasp of local issues, and are directly working with those affected in rural communities.  We will keep everyone updated in every step of the way.

Furthermore, we are working with the Bard Center for Civic Engagement as well as the Trustee Leader–Scholar Program to eventually turn this campaign into an established Bard initiative. Some of us will be in Nepal this summer, and will be actively seeking the right avenues to channel the funds from this campaign to in order to make a substantial difference to affected communities.

Every dollar counts* and no financial support is small. We hope for your empathy and active support so that we, our families, and our nation can recover from this tragedy.
