Help Kye Fly!

Hi everyone, we have created this page to hopefully raise funds to help Kye fly to Washington D.C regularly over the next 5 years for treatment and check ups.

Kye was diagnosed with Hodgkins Lymphoma in December 2012 after finding lumps in his neck and a PET scan revealed a mass in his chest. He had multiple rounds of chemotherapy, radiotherapy and an autologous stem cell transplant which killed the lumps in his neck but barely touched the mass in his chest. It was then discovered after another biopsy that the mass in his chest was not the same type of cancer that he was being treated for. It turns out that it was actually Primary Mediastinal Diffuse Large B-cell Non-Hodgkins Lymphoma, a rare type of aggressive cancer. Kye then had more chemotherapy in the hope of getting him into remission and giving him an allogeneic stem cell transplant using his sisters stem cells, but the chemotherapy was not successful. Kye was told he was terminally ill at the age of 23.

As a family, we decided we could not accept this news and we began our search for alternative treatments and clinical trials. Eventually, in March 2015, Kye was accepted onto a clinical Trial in Oxford called CXD101. After only two rounds of the treatment we were told that the cancer had progressed and spread to his lung so the trial could not continue.

In July 2015, a family member in Houston Texas made us aware of a hospital over there that may be able to help, so the fundraising began. Thanks to the amazing people who donated we managed to raise enough to get Kye across to Texas and get him a consultation at MD Anderson Cancer Center. The doctors in Texas told us that there was treatment available to Kye in Texas or in Washington D.C. We chose Washington because the treatment was being conducted at a research hospital, which meant the treatment was free.

Since September 2015 we have been backwards and forwards to Washington. Kye, so far, has had; chemotherapy to prepare his body for the treatment, anti tumour drugs and an allogeneic stem cell transplant using his sister Rebecca's stem cells. The labs over here have also modified some of Rebecca's T-cells to specifically target Kye's cancer and have them frozen ready to thaw and give to Kye should he need them, but so far, things have gone pretty well.

Anyone who has had to deal with cancer, whether it be yourself, a friend or a family member will know that these things are unpredictable. There have been so many times that we thought we were out of the woods to then be thrown back to where we started. Last week we found out that Rebecca's immune system is finally taking hold in Kye's body and fighting the tumour in his chest! This was the best news we could have hoped for!

Kye will need to fly backwards and forwards regularly between our home town in Yorkshire, England and Washington D.C for the next 5 years to make sure the treatment is successful. Unfortunately, flights this often do not come cheap, which is why we have started a fundraising page on Facebook called Help Kye Fly and this Go Fund Me page.

We we are pleading with you to please help us, we are so thankful for all of the support and help we have already received and for everyone who has made this possible. This treatment has given Kye a future, please help us keep it that way.

Thankyou, the Eastwood family x
