In November 2014, I traveled to Nepal with my best friend, Lisa, to volunteer at a tiny remote village named Gorkha. We assisted an organization called Lending Promise, that provides micro loans to women to start their own businesses and become independent. We also brought tons of school supplies to the local elementrary school in Gorkha, which was then established as SJLC's sister school.
The Gorkha district is the location of the earthquake's epicentre, in which 70% of its houses were destroyed! We are still waiting to hear back from several of our contacts, but we know they are in desperate need of help ASAP. The earthquake has already killed over 7,000 people and injured over 14,000 as of 5/3/2015 - there are shortages of water, food and electricity, while disease is also a concern.
The San Jose Learning Center is pledging to donate $5 from EVERY class registration for our upcoming May/June program, which starts May 4th. In addition, we are also doing this fundraiser to provide more funds to the "Gorkha Foundation", which is the main charity organization located inside this village. 100% of the contributions received will go to the victims (zero overhead).
