Hi everyone! My name is Katy Marcella!
I'm a dancer and aspiring choreographer living in Los Angeles, CA, and I am one of a handful of applicants accepted to Dance Lab New York's Broadway Choreography Intensive this summer! This is a one-of-a-kind, two week intensive designed to teach aspiring choreographers the ins-and-outs of what it means to choreograph on a professional scale, and I am beyond excited to be one of 10 choreographers accepted!
The opportunity to apply for this experience fell into my lap unexpectedly. I've been choreographing local productions for the past few years, but was disappointed to discover a few weeks ago that funding for a summer production I was set to choreograph fell through. This production would have been the biggest, most extravagant endeavor I'd be apart of yet, and knowing it was postponed left a whole in my heart, and a strong hunger to grow creatively as an artist and individual this summer. Enter Dance Lab New York, and a chance to have a crash course in being a professional choreographer.
Why this intensive, though? Why learn how to "choreograph" when I've already been doing it? This intensive, held at the Baryshnikov Arts Center in midtown Manhattan, focuses on all scopes of musical dance creation - masterclasses in original Broadway choreography, principles of technique, interpreting scores/collaborating with musical directors, creating new work for musical revivals, working with your tech designers, meeting choreography agents, and much more! After a week of learning, I'll have the opportunity to create a piece with a Broadway mentor, as well as participate in my fellow peers' works. What better place to learn than in the heart of New York City, just a few steps away from the Great White Way?
This experience will do exactly what I've been craving - it will challenge me. It will put me in a new environment where I am forced to rely not on what I already know, but on what I don't even know I can tap into. I will return a better, more well-rounded artist, and ready to tackle any new (or postponed) opportunities that may come my way.
The total cost to attend this incredible intensive is $2,400 USD, plus airfare and other travel expenses. My initial down payment of $1,200 is due by mid-June, with the remainder due by the end of July. It's a huge financial commitment to take on (not to mention the time I'd have to take off work to attend), but I fully believe that this opportunity (and all the twists and turns leading up to it) were put on my path for a reason, and I can't help but pull out all of the stops to make it happen.
I am incredibly grateful for any sized contribution, as every little bit helps me get closer to my goal. Shares are just as important as dollars, so please know I'm appreciative of support shown in any possible way. :)
