Meet Hearts and Homes, an organization that helps young people who have been emotionally troubled and experienced trauma in their lives. Over the years, they have expanded and now serve young men, young women, young mothers, and foster children. The youth are referred to them from the Department of Juvenile Services, by the Department of Social Services or by another similar organization. They are then put in one of their shelters, according to their needs.
Our homes are important because they give the youth a second chance to build a brighter future for themselves. The group homes are shelters that serve as alternative placement to Maryland’s correctional facilities and, or to an unsafe living environment. The majority of their young people are dealing with issues of emotional and psychological distress. These youth particularly do better when they are in a nurturing environment where they feel safe and secure. Once the staff builds a trusting relationship with the youth they are more self-motivated to take advantage of resources provided to them and create independent goals for success.
We are asking for your help to raise money for the Harriet Tubman Emergency Shelter, which is a respite home for young men who have fallen off the track. Instead of going to a detention center, they are sent to Our Home, where they have the support, stability, encouragement, and nurturing that all youth deserve.
The Home is a "Living Legacy" - giving new life to young boys who deserve opportunities to realize The Dream. The Shelter is their very own Overground Railroad to Freedom, just as Harriet Tubman’s Underground Railroad. There is not a more fitting tribute to a woman whose devotion brought freedom to those otherwise imprisoned within a culture of racial bias, treachery, and the enslavement of an entire segment of the human race. They are dedicated to helping young men realize their dreams by providing life skills training, healthcare, school enrollment and advocacy, counseling, therapy, and job placement assurance.
