Who we are:

Hill Dance Academy Theatre, (HDAT) is a non profit community arts education program located in Pittsburgh, PA’s historically and culturally rich Hill District and the home of Pulitzer Prize Playwright August Wilson.  Our mission is to provide dance to children ages 3 to 18 with a particular focus on using dance as a developmental tool to help youth become lovers of the arts, support and develop life skills, and academic performance while learning about the contributions of African dance and dance in the Black traditions.

What were raising the money for:

HDAT’s seven pre-professional company members, ages 10 to 15 years, together share a total of number of 50 years of studying dance and developing as dance artist. These youthful aspiring dancers are well trained and hungry to experience a week long Ballet Intensive, March 19 through 23 for students ages 8 and above with unrivaled world class Ballet Masters from the US and Russia that include Misty Copeland, Dwight Rhoden, Desmond Richardson, Madame Khaniashvili and Madame Jigarhan of the Bolshoi, and Debbie Allen. The students will have a master class with Misty Copeland and a “Talkback with Misty Copeland” hosted by Debbie Allen. HDAT is raising the money to provide the seven company members with this extraordinary once in a lifetime experience.

How the money will be used:

The monies will be used to provide the seven student dancers with round trip airfare to Los Angeles, hotel accommodations, for 5 nights, ground transportation and registration for the Intensive.

How soon do we need the funds:

The funds needed immediately include booking air flights and registering each dancer for the Intensive at the cost of $750/student, (students have been assessed $350 of that amount), and hotel cost is payable on check out.

Why this means so much to us:

Misty Copeland is a role model for every dancer; however, for African American dancers her life’s journey offers hope, a celebration of culture, embracing identity and grit and determination to remain committed and disciplined in pursuit of one’s goals.  HDAT company dancers, all placed their hands on a barré at an after school community organization at ages 6 to 8 years old and we do not know which dancer or dancers will be the next unlikely ballerina, but I know that they are all dreaming of the chance to succeed like Misty.  This opportunity to meet Misty, Participate in her Master class and have conversations, up close and personal with Misty is something, HDAT would like to make happen for these seven young aspiring dancers.

How thankful we are:

As an organization, we will be forever thankful and blessed and we will remember, to whom much is given, much is expected and we will, in our local community and beyond engage in paying it forward for others as a means of taking a good deed/service and expanding/sharing/creating blessings for others.
