Hi,
My name is Joshua J. Ruggs, I am 16 years old, a Junior at Salisbury High School in Salisbury, NC. I have been given the honor of being selected for the Harvard Pre-College Summer Program. I received the news on yesterday the cost of tuition, housing, and meals is $4,500. I am asking social media and my community to Go Fund Me, so that I can continue my educational path.
The reason I am interested in attending the Harvard Pre-College Summer Program besides furthering my education, is to inspire others who come from single parent homes to follow their dreams, despite their personal circumstances. Where I'm from, I'm already labeled as a statistic; however, I believe in the power of education and defying the odds. Even though my environment is filled with gang violence and negativity; I see myself as the rose that grew through the concrete. Some would say I'm not supposed to have this once in a lifetime opportunity. However, I worked hard for this opportunity, and I refuse to be the stereotype of the modern day teenage African-American male.
I currently have a 4.0 GPA, I'm on the National Honor Society, National Technical Honor Society, I make straight A's, and I also have Perfect Attendance. I'm currently Vice President of COMPASS which stands for being: Confident Optimistic Motivated Persistent Assertive Studious and Successful. Before I was voted the COMPASS Man of the Year, I was an introvert, had few friends, and I wasn't as confident and outgoing as I am today. I am actively involved in my church and community. I volunteer at Rowan Helping Ministries, Habitat for Humanity, and the Veteran's Hospital.
I would greatly appreciate your help in assisting me with making this dream come true. No gift is too small!! I am so grateful to God for blessing me with this life changing opportunity, and I promise to make you proud.
