Hands Up For Lucy

Donation protected

Hello!

Through the power of community, we are raising money to assist our sister,  Amy,  purchase a modified vehicle capable of accommodating a wheel-chair for Lucy, our much-loved niece.

Lucy’s wheelchair, which is a vital part of Lucy's everyday life, weighs approximately 25 kgs.  As Lucy continues to grow, she will require newer, heavier chairs that will only cause further strain on Amy’s back through repetitive lifting.  A modified van would enable Amy and Lucy to easily attend medical appointments and join in with family and friends at social events.

Your donation will help Amy continue to do the great work she does with Lucy and assist the family for years into the future.

More about Lucy…

Lucy was born 2 months premature and stayed in intensive care for the first 6 weeks of her life.  At 1 year, Lucy was diagnosed with Cerebral Palsy.  Since this time Lucy has seen countless specialists.  It is likely that Lucy has a severe intellectual disability however, this cannot be confirmed as she is both non-verbal and has poor motor control limiting her communication options.  Lucy has experienced seizures and struggles to put on weight.  Due to her multiple health complications and limited ability to communicate, Lucy can at times become very upset and have significant meltdowns.

But Lucy has always been a fighter…with a big personality.  Lucy gets about her world in a wheel chair but also with a “froggy jump” around her house on all fours.  Although she cannot speak, Lucy certainly makes her presence known.  She is a sweet heart who greets familiar people with a smile and a friendly squeal.  Lucy absolutely loves the water! Swimming in it, lying in it, even spitting it out when she should be drinking it.  She loves strawberries.  She can spot them from across the room and good luck keeping them from her. Lucy loves light and colour and all sorts of interesting textures.  Despite the difficulties that Lucy faces, she loves attending school and trying new experiences.

More about Amy…

Amy recently moved to Gunnedah in regional NSW to allow Lucy to attend the local school for high needs children and be closer to both sets of grandparents.  Amy is a kind and self-less person who has always put others before herself.  She has received a young citizen of the year award for her academic achievements and commitment to the Mendooran community, she has been a volunteer English teacher in Vanuatu, she has completed a double degree in law and politics and has been admitted as a lawyer.   She is currently completing her PHD.  Throughout the last 7 years, Amy has worked tirelessly to support her daughter, Lucy, in every way possible.  It is only fair that we put our hands up to support her and her daughter.
