Send a Musician & Educator to Bali
I teach music and choir in Dekalb IL. I am also a graduate student at Northern Illinois University where I'm finishing my Masters degree with a dual concentration in Music Education and World Music. My program is offering a Study Abroad experience in Bali, Indonesia this summer for one month, for which I have applied.
My Study Abroad Program in Bali
The cost for the program is $4665, which includes tuition, housing, 3 meals a day, land transportation, and fees to sights, plus insurance. In addition, we are responsible for our airfare, ($2,500 in coach) visa's ($25) passport ($130) and personal expenses such as souvenirs ($200-500) while we are abroad. This leads to a grand total of $7500-7,800. Thanks to the generosity of my mother, as well as my own savings, and some extra income singing, and giving voice lessons professionally this year, I have been able to raise $4,665 towards the program costs. I have also applied for 3 different Grants available to graduate students and Educators.
Where else will I get to participate in activities I've only read about, or simulated in class such as Monkey Chant (Kecak) or Wai Lan shadow puppetry? This is more than professional development! I have a passion for world music, and have been an active member in several of the University's ensembles, including their Gamelan orchestra. I frequently share my knowledge and experience with my 6-8th grade students in a yearly class unit on world music. The experiences and artifacts with which I return could not only enrich their classroom experience, but would be far more engaging that books or readings.

While many study abroad programs are offered during the regular school year, I am responsible for my job as a full time educator. This summer program fits my career calender and is an outstanding opportunity for professional and academic growth. Furthermore, my husband Jake and I rely on my sole income throughout the year, as he is also a full time student in Radiology. He's actually the one who has continuously encouraged me to follow my dreams and apply for this program, even if it means missing our first anniversary together.
I don't ordinarily like to ask folks for handouts, therefore all donations will be met with personal favors or labor from me. :) Do you like baked goods? Do you want to have a copy of some of the materials I've created or received while studying? Could I make you dinner one night? (I'm a fabulous cook!!!!) Is there something reasonable you'd like me to bring home from my travels? Every Little Bit helps!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Thank you again for your support and generosity,
-Lisa Maxfield
