Guildford Chess Academy

We need help to pay our annual rental fees and to remain the first UK chess academy focused on providing top-class professional chess training for those budding chess stars. Those stars can then easily transform into leading next generation scientists. After all, it is a proven fact that chess significanly facilitates brain and intellectual development, particularly in gifted and talented children.

Traditional chess clubs in the UK represent places where older gentlemen go to play chess and socialise a bit.  Those clubs can also suit to those who want to play formal matches or occasional informal games over the board.

Now, the problem is that those traditional clubs do not make any attempt to provide proper professional coaching. Another big issue is that they do not attract women because of their typical locations and composition. Even those women who would like to join, learn and enjoy chess are often afraid of entering an "old gentlemens" club.

We are very different because we are based on different principles. We are the first UK chess academy which is not a mere chess club but a chess academy with particular emphasis on talented children and interested women and parents.

Our firm belief is that we really need to move away from the concept of the chess club meeting in the evening in a draughty church hall or grotty pub. They are really not suitable for both children and women and even some respectable men who want to play and learn chess in a better environment.

We are also different to school chess clubs who are not in position to bring top class trainers and can really cater only for beginners.

As a distinction we a centre of chess excellence bringing senior ECF (English Chess Federation) trainers outside of London in a bid to make their coaching affordable and accessible for aspiring youngsters, parents and woman players alike.

Amongst our trainers we have International Master Julian Meszaros whose recent highlights include the success of 14-year old Akshaya Kalaiyalahan who has become British Womens Champion this August (not only among her age group but among all British women)!

Amongst our students we have a number of budding stars such as three-times British Under 11 Champion Alex Golding or 5-year old Alice Amos, our youngest members who was also the youngest member of British Mensa (The High IQ society) at the age of 3. Her story as a toddler with incredible IQ level (similar to that of Albert Einstein) became known worldwide. It can still be found and read on the Internet.

This is why we are not an ordinary club but a unique learning centre aiming at gifted and talented children and adults alike. We work for all but in particular for those already hitting ceiling in local chess clubs. They desperately need to get proper training to grow further and compete at the higher levels nationally and internationally.
