Help our Girls go to College

Our History:

Three years ago, the African Center for Community Empowerment (ACCE) met with community members to assess the need for positive female mentors. After feedback from the roundtable discussion, ACCE launched Girls (Providing Resources for Improvement Dignity and Empowerment) P.R.I.D.E Project on May 19th, 2012. When the project first started we had 0 participants. By 2013, the project increased to 47 participants.  In 2014, Girls P.R.I.D.E reached 67 young women and girls from diverse backgrounds. Today, Girls P.R.I.D.E Project is tackling several challenges at-risk young women and girls are facing in their social environment. We are meeting young women and girls where they are at. For example, we are conducting workshops and forums at schools and in communities around social and economic issues affecting women and girls.

Mission Statement:

The Girls PRIDE Project supports and encourages higher education, job training, civic engagement, poverty alleviation, and economic development for young women and girls of color from underserved communities including the promotion of equal access to full employment and decent work to alleviate the cycle of poverty, social, and economic disparities. The project focuses on underserved communities with minimal to limited access (geographically and economically) to services. In addition, we extend our services to homeless teenage girls, girls in foster care, and women in alternative-to-incarceration programs.

Our Goals:

The goal is to identify at-risk young women and girls in the community and through mentoring
help them to discover their individual identity (self-discovery); to become aware of their individuality, gifts, talents, and potential (self-awareness); to believe in one self and nurture passions and purpose (self-assurance); and employ every ounce of confidence (self-projection/expression). The purpose for participating in the project is for young women and girls to leave with a better understanding of the challenges they face, knowledge and the tools to push through those challenges, educational and employment opportunities, financial resources and other avenues to explore to help them improve self-confidence, and become successful citizens. The anticipated outcome for participating young women and girls is to leave the project empowered.

We want to provide 10 girls with $1,500 scholarships for continuing education.
