Don't Pollute the Indian River

Donation protected
A Korean Poultry company wants to put a chicken slaughter house on a site that once was a old pickle plant.  They want to slaughter 2 million chickens a week and discharge 12 million gallons of waste water a week into the Indian River.  The discharge point is approx. 300 yards from our back yards where we fish, crab and swim in the river.  Our community is surrounded by industrial pollution in a 2 mile radius including aother poultry slaughter house and many other sources of air and water pollution, there are 2 elementary schools a mile away.  Millsboro  is less than 2 square miles and has more hazardous sites and Superfund sites then the entire states of Nevada and North Dakota.  As early as 1991 this site was noted to have nitrates leaking into the ground water in our community  via a letter, the Dept. of Natural Resources ignored it.   Our community is basically low income blacks, whites, hispanic, and senior citizens  that cannot afford to fight the State of Delaware's Dept. of Natural Resources thats wants to give them the permits to discharge into the river.   The pollution problems in our rivers is so great that 88% of the rivers & Streams do not support swimming use and 97% do not support fish and wildlife use.  In some cases it is recommended that you only eat no more than 2 fish a year.  These are documented facts from the State of Delaware.  The EPA has stopped a wastewater treatment plant and the other poultry plant from discharging into the river yet they want to allow this Korean company to discharge.  Something is really wrong with this picture(corruption of our State Officials)  The University of Maryland recently did a Health Impact Assessment on this stating that no way should this happen and how it would affect our health and the children  and it was ignored by the State of Delaware and their representatives.  The Delaware Board of Healtlh refused to come to a meeting where the University of Maryland presented the facts of the Health Impact Assessment.  Environmental Justice is the fair treatment  of all people reguardless of color, national orgin or income, it means that everyone should have a right to live in a clean and healthy environment, unfortunately poor communitites are more likely to live near polluting industries.  They bear the brunt of the harmful health effects associated with pollution because we do not have the resources to fight the government.  We need the money to hire a lawyer to appeal the decision of the state to allow this site to be considered a hazaradous waste site and allow them to pollute our river that flows into the Atlantic Ocean.  For more information go to our FB page:  Protecting our Indian River
