Chess Club Bakersfield to D.C. Trip

November 20th, ten chess players from Bessie Owens Intermediate GATE Magnet School get the amazing opportunity to go to Washington D.C. If you know anything about chess, you know who Eugene Brown is. Eugene Brown uses Chess to teach inner city students valuable life lessons, his most famous one- "Think B 4 U Move." Mr. Brown learned his life lessons the hard way through his own challenging life which was made into a movie "Life of A King," in which he was portrayed by Cuba Gooding Jr. Mr. Brown overcame his obstacles and used what he learned to teach childeren. He is the founder of the Big Chair Chess Club in Washington D.C. There is also a Bakersfield Chapter. He recently came to Bakersfield to play chess with local students and watch a showing of the movie with those students.
Mr. Brown, as well as the Chess Grand Master,- Maurice Ashby, has invited our childeren to play in the Big Chair Chess club invitational Tournament at the world renowned Cosmos Club.The Cosmos club is a private social club, founded in 1878 by men oc science, literature and the arts. It's memebers inlcude "three Presidents, two Vice Presidents, a dozen Supreme Court Justices, 32 Nobel Prize Winners, 56 Pulitzer Prize winners and 4 recipients of the Presidential Medal of Freedom." Our kids get to go there!!! Amazing!!
This is a pricey venture. Parents have agreed to cover $200 of the costs for their children but the team still needs at least $8000 to ensure that all the children get to go. We are asking you, our community and friends to help send these promising young children to Washington for an experience of a lifetime!
