Motorcycle Rebuild & Mental Health.
BMW Motorcycle Rebuild & Mental Health: Fixing The Broken Machine.
The single simple function of this project is to facilitate the rehabilitation of my UK based ’79 1K BMW Airhead Motosickle Rat-bike. That and the subsidiary aim of me being able to see a way forward in my life…
Input:
- 1x knackered self build which is my solitary form of transport. Ripe with problems to sort please see budget/jobs-list here .
- The loss of my work mate, in the death of my dearest friend*
- The desire/imperative need for change.
- I already have a small number of the required parts and will input my labour & project management time. I have far too much time here amongst the Sundays…
Process:
- Repairing of said machine to a functional state wherein it makes my life ‘better’.
- I will undertake all work I am able to myself, with some things beyond my modest mechanical ‘skillz’ farmed out to our local ‘bloke called Dave in a shed’ bike mechanics e.g. repair of engine stud thread, or other specialists (e.g. Ferret's Custom Elecktrickery) for rebuild & stabilisation of electrical system i.e. my weakest weak point.
Output:
- Functional machine = Decreased ‘Grrrrrrr’.
- Increased reliable transport to increase my chances in the work market & access to rural housing options.
- Text, photog & video reportage of process within the ongoing thread/blog kindly hosted by ADV Rider, which is entitled ‘Insert Clever Airhead Based Title Here...’**
- The continued existence & running of the bike is a symbolic personal tribute to my deceased friend Peter, in terms of refurbishing a machine we built together & continuing the ‘un-gineering ethos’ we jointly applied with glee.
- Me being able to carry on riding the phukka… :-D
This is not a cosmetic refurbishment. All work is required purely to get the bluddy thing running reliably again so that I can get on with my life. This is no costly generic scrambler ‘Promenade Percy’ vanity rebuild. The overarching ethic is ‘Build It Better, Ride It Worse’ :-D At the same time I respect a quality build, I just can't reach that standard, sheesh I failed Metalwork :-D
The bike in question was first put together some 8 years ago from out of boxes in my then ‘Shedquarters’. Until I lost everything it was the home of the Imaginary Motorcycle Maufactuary run with Peter, under the moniker of ‘Martha Farquar Motosickles’. The bike to be refurbished was MF03 and goes by the name of ‘The DMW’. It’s a BMW, my first initial is D. Geddit?!? :-D It's my only form of transport...
Personally, in the spirit of total openness, I am in a deep mire of lifelong depression & chronic insomnia along with the outcomes of a massive heart attack August ’13. Also, I am a Tw@t :-D I’m 50, live in sheltered accommodation & I’m sitting so deep in a hole I dug myself I cannot imagine how I might ever get out. I’m currently signed unfit for work and have absolutely zero disposable income. I need to change my situation and while I recognise the proposed project isn’t a panacea to all my ills, it will go some way towards re-energising me & making me more mobile in the job market, all with the aim of climbing out of said hole, whole. A broader exposition of my circumstance is shown here . Somewhere there amongst the whining.
Thank you for your time & consideration, I hope you find yourself able to support this project.
Daniel :-)
* I knew Pete for 25 years or more having met when he started as Deputy Director at the Community Arts Centre I worked at as a Community Music Worker. He died 11th Jan ’14 from massive cancer of the pancreas which had spread across his lungs & stomach. I can make no sense of this. The Phukk-Eulogy I delivered at his grave side, which came out as-is in one shot, is shown here .
** I post as Planktonnn, Peter posted as Pjcr12. The thread/blog is currently at around 500,000 hits… Online metrics are, in the end, meaningless, and tho/ough 500k is not inconsiderable it’s understood that the average News/Clickbait site might garner that many hits p/hr. Still…
