Hello! My name is Fernando Barragan. I am 17 years old and currently a junior in Granbury High School. I have been playing the euphonium since the sixth grade. I am currently the principal euphonium in the Wind Ensemble at my high school, and I am a member of the Paluxy River Community Band. I am in the National Honor Society and the Superintendent Student Advisory Committee.

I am a member of the Oregon Crusaders Drum and Bugle Corps. We are a youth non-profit performing arts organization based in Portland, Oregon.  We perform throughout the United States each summer, competing against some of the top music organizations in the world as the Pacific Northwest's top drum and bugle corps and the only one that represents Oregon.

This summer, we will be rehearsing and touring over 10 weeks, traveling over 10,000 miles throughout the United States and culminating in the World Championships at the Colts stadium in Indianapolis, Indiana.  On days that we are not traveling, we are usually practicing up to 12 hours a day. We travel by bus and sleep on gym floors. It's a highly disciplined experience. We get up when we’re told, go where we’re told, eat what we’re told, and have to learn to live with 149 other people that are doing the same thing. Thousands of students all across the country participate and compete in over 100 DCI competitions during the summer.

Why do we do it?  We do it because we are all focused on the same goal – to push ourselves to be the best that we can possibly be.  We end up producing a great show that combines percussion, brass, dance and visual artistry.  It’s very demanding and intense, requiring a lot of every member that is selected.  It’s an activity like no other, drawing students from all over the country to be a part of this program.  Through this activity, we learn some valuable life skills – discipline, the value of hard work, teamwork, attention to detail, personal responsibility, and many other characteristics that become ingrained in us by a professional education staff that are also committed to these ideals.

One of the biggest obstacles in marching a World Class Drum Corp is the membership fees. I now have to take on the responsibility of raising $3500. This cost breaks down into tuition, food, housing, transportation, and small miscellaneous costs. I am asking for your financial support by sponsoring me as a member of the Oregon Crusaders. This is the opportunity of a life time that I can only experience through age 21.  Any amount that you donate to my cause would be greatly appreciated!
