No sport demands more of its athletes and its fans than boxing. However, the sport is in dire need of reform.
The media, which should be the driving force behind reform, is deeply and tragically compromised in boxing. All of the major boxing websites are either owned or subsidized by money from industry insiders who guarantee that what we see is little more than public relations.
It is The Boxing Tribune 's goal to establish the first truly independent mainstream news site that can take up the battle for reform and say the things that so desperately need to be said.
However, we are at a great disadvantage since we have no operations budget and must depend on pennies a day while our industry-backed competitors enjoy a full budget to compensate staff and keep their sites working with state of the art equipment and SEO experts.
We hope to raise funds for a one-year push start, just until we can establish our presence as a mainstream site. We have already been working The Boxing Tribune for five years and have done well, considering our limitations, but our goals when it comes to reform and high-end journalism require a real budget.
With the money raised here, we will hire a full-time webmaster and SEO expert to get the site optimized behind the scenes. We will also compensate writing staff, which will facilitate a move to higher-end work and cutting-edge investigative pieces.
Personally, I have been in and around the sport of boxing for over thirty years and can testify as to the soul-saving possibilities of this sport. The athletes and fans deserve a real media presence and one which will fight for positive change. We hope to be that presence.
