Fat Books Series: FAT SCIENCE

Donation protected
The next book in the Fat Books Series is going to be about and called FAT SCIENCE. While the book will be complex to write, the idea is simple: it will be a book written for the general public (a "trade," not academic publication) that aims to gather the most pertinent and up-to-date information on fat and weight medical science, looking at it through the lens of the social sciences. So in other words, the research that is going on regarding "obesity," but also stigma, and that information will be put in the context of how and why the research is done and how it impacts society.

This will not be a diet oriented book. It will explore what we know, don't know, and think we know about the science of weight and fat. It will address common misconceptions about weight loss, weight and health, and extreme measures such as weight loss surgery -- and what the scientific community actually knows, and does not yet know. New paradigms will be investigated, such as Health At Every Size® and Intuitive/Mindful Eating. But most importantly, this book will explore the extensive new work in the medical as well as social science community that is often under-or-miss-represented.

Although it will be heavily research driven, it will not be a formally academic book, it will be written to be (hopefully) interesting to the general public. I will include my use of anecdotal narrative story telling to help illustrate the issues and make the book more "fun" to read; but as Fat Sex was almost exclusively story telling, and Fat Kids used science to punctuate the stories, in this book, the stories will be used to punctuate the informational research.

Work such as this is diffuclt to fund -- it is meant to be a bridge between emerging science and social change -- two worlds not necessarily aligned. However, there is a great deal more overlap than is often recognized, and each can learn from each other, and the pulbic can learn from both.  As I am independent and unafilated, I hope to bring an objective perspective that illuminates diverse important information. My independence also means I do not have instutional financial backing.

Although GoFundMe does not have "rewards" like some other sites, I will be providing electronic copies of the book to supporters who pledge $15 or more, as well mupliple copies and copies of past books for larger pledges. And as usual, supporters will be acknowledged in the book and on the website. There will be more information to come.

Thank you!
