Hi everyone! I’m Fan-Pei Koung, and I need your help to run for Miss Taiwanese American 2015. Specifically, I need money for all of the crazy gowns, tailoring, accessories, dance classes, video, hair and makeup, etc. required to compete, not to mention funding for my year of service for the Taiwanese American community!

Just to describe myself, I’m a Houston native, graduated from a college called Rice University in two years, then worked at the top cancer hospital in the US, where we researched how to integrate the best of both Eastern and Western medicine for the continuum of cancer care.
While I was at MD Anderson Cancer Center, I won two travel awards, two performance awards, and four presentations and publications. I got accepted to Yale, Columbia, Johns Hopkins, Carnegie-Mellon, Northwestern, and also won first place in a NASA hackathon, where I won tickets to come to California! And that’s where I’ve been ever since…. four months ago.
Now I work at a Silicon Valley tech startup based in Taiwan. I’m actually going to Taiwan for the first time ever with my company!
Since I arrived, I also became the brand ambassador for Shenova, a fashion line that celebrates women in science and technology. I’m also trained to mentor former victims of human trafficking and am planning a media campaign to combat this with the Wren Project. I’m also always working on cool art projects like a drone photoshoot with an MIT expert, an avant-garde Asian beauty project with an amazing makeup artist, drawing comics, or planning events to combine the best minds from the best women in any field I can find.

It’s been so cool to be a Texas and a California girl, and to be Taiwanese and American. It’s been such a whirlwind of experiences and I’ve gained so much from the richness and complexity of my multiple heritages.
I’m running for Miss Taiwanese American because I define myself by my belief that everyone is capable of so much more than they could ever imagine, and am very passionate about exploring people’s potentials, especially women at the intersection of multiple cultures, disciplines, and generations. I cherish this opportunity to redefine modern beauty and embark on a whole new year of community service with the support of Miss Taiwanese American! I’m inspired by all the people I’ve met so far here, and can’t wait to start!
But that’s where I need your help. Because I can’t just walk in and be the nerd that I am. I have to transform. For this competition, I need four evening gowns, with at least a metric ton of bling on them, tailored, two cocktail dresses, tailored, shoes and accessories, costumes, at least one decent bra, at least three makeup and hair artist sessions, a dance instructor to help with my dance talent, a videographer, travel costs, food -when I can eat, and that doesn’t even cover my year of service for the Taiwanese American community that will follow if I do win.
And as much as I enjoy doing my whole living out of my car, starving artist, bootstrapped, lean startup, minimum viable person thing, it’s not going to cut it for this competition. In order to become Miss Taiwanese American, I need to become Miss Taiwanese American. And I don’t have money right now, but I have a dream, and that’s pretty much the Asian American story. So any help would be great, can be ten or ten thousand dollars, or just a shout out, sharing my story, subscribing to my stuff, anything. I know what I can do for my community, and I would love to have your support. See you then!
