On 18th May 2025, at 11:30pm, our lives changed forever.

I (Hannah) opened the door to find a police officer standing there. In that moment, I was told my brother, Steven, had been in a serious car accident.

Steven was blue-lighted to King’s Hospital after telling paramedics he couldn’t feel his body. Doctors later confirmed the devastating news: he had broken his neck in two places.

Steven underwent multiple surgeries and spent over a week in an induced coma. When he finally woke, our worst fears were confirmed. Steven is quadriplegic, with a partially severed spinal cord.

After time in Margate ICU and the Canterbury Neuro Rehabilitation Unit, Steven has now been transferred to Stoke Mandeville Hospital, where he is receiving specialist spinal injury treatment.

Steven’s future is uncertain. He will never walk again, and it’s likely he will never regain full use of his arms.

Watching Steven go through this has been heartbreaking. We are grieving the brother and son we once knew, while trying to face a future none of us were prepared for.

Steven also has a four-year-old daughter who, heartbreakingly, will never be able to fully hug or take part in everyday activities with him in the way most children can.

Alongside the emotional devastation comes an overwhelming financial burden. Steven will need lifelong support, including:

• Home adaptations

• Specialist equipment

• Wheelchairs and mobility aids

• Accessible transport

• Ongoing care
