Support Sara Brown's Medical Journey

Hi, I’m Roby, Sara’s husband.

Sara (Scanlon) Brown is an educator, wife, mother, daughter, sister, friend, avid reader, Hufflepuff and faithful 49ers fan. Her family - myself and our children, Casey and Kieran - are raising funds to cover the medical costs of a difficult hospital experience and expenses to support a potentially permanent health condition.

On Friday, Oct 11, Sara experienced feeling weak and having trouble walking. On Saturday, her hands started violently trembling. Later on, the trembling gave way to full-body convulsions. She visited the ER, and was quickly admitted to St. David’s Hospital in Austin, Texas.

The first night consisted of tests - blood, CT and MRI. None of the tests showed any conclusive results. Despite no answers, the trembling continued to worsen. After a time, she could not stand or move on her own. The doctors consulted with other professionals and neurologists. They tweaked medications and found no solutions.

On Thursday, Oct 17 - one day before her 50th birthday - she was transferred to a rehabilitation hospital.

After almost two weeks, the medical team has possibly identified what is going on. Functional Neurological Disorder or FND. Basically, something triggered the brain messages to stop firing. What Sara is doing is retraining the brain to talk to the muscles and having the muscles do what the brain says.

The plan is for physical therapy to restore her mobility and for medications to end the tremors. It’s unknown how long Sara will be out of work. We do not know how long she will be in the rehabilitation hospital. Even after discharge, more rehabilitation will likely be needed.

While we remain optimistic for a full recovery, there are already permanent repercussions. The biggest one is a medical bill that continues to climb every day she is in the hospital. Faced with this uncertainty, we decided to ask for help.

We are raising funds to pay for medical bills, possible income replacement, rehabilitation, caregiver expenses, and disability assistance devices that may be necessary once she returns home.

Sara is the most selfless person around - always putting other’s needs above hers.

This is an urgent need to help a helper.

We thank you for the love, prayers and support.
