Support an IPV Survivor with Custody Legal Fees

We have made this fundraiser for a dear friend who has left an abusive relationship and is now being forced to enter custody proceedings with their abuser, after having tried court mediation to no avail.

Unfortunately, the nonprofit in their area that typically offers legal aid does not provide pro bono representation for child custody hearings. Local family attorneys that they have connected with are similarly unable to offer pro bono counsel at this time.

Given the nature of the financial abuse they have endured, which has put them in significant debt, they are also ineligible for loans. Already they have had to spend thousands of dollars on representation just to make it through the court mediation process.

We are turning to our communities now, in the hope that we can give our friend some much-needed respite from what has been a long ordeal. They are a deeply devoted parent, as well as a long-time care worker & organizer who advocates for their Queer, Trans and Indigenous communities harder than anyone we know. We hope we can support them with even a fraction of the love they consistently pour into others!

They have chosen to remain anonymous at this time for their own safety and well-being.

The cost of securing representation for this kind of proceeding, though it varies greatly, can be as much as $40,000. We are setting this as our goal in order to ensure that they have the legal representation they need for the duration of the custody hearings.
