The current economic crisis has impacted Sri Lankans from all walks of life, Sri Lanka is facing its worst economic crisis since independence in 1948. Inflation has skyrocketed to 29.8%, meaning ordinary families are unable to afford basic goods. A chronic shortage of imported goods including food, medicine, and fuel has resulted in long queues, due to the shortage of fuel, people are standing for more than 4 to 5 days just to purchase 10Ltrs of petrol. Several people have died of exhaustion waiting in queues since March this year.

Parents skip two meals a day so that they could feed their children, there are growing fears that the economic crisis will cascade into a health crisis, as the crumbling healthcare system struggles to supply the medicines and transport required for patient care. People are enduring daily power cuts, lasting up to 13 hours a day. A paper shortage has resulted in the cancellation of school exams for children. The situation is still getting worse.

It is heartbreaking for Sri Lankans living in Tasmania to see their very own families and friends suffer during these difficult times, and the feeling of helplessness and not being able to support their loved ones.

To provide necessary supplies of food, school stationery, and medication, the SLCST has set up this fund. We urge our friends, Sri Lankans, and other nationalities in Australia to support this cause. All proceeds from this fundraiser will be channeled through Not for profits such as Save the Children’s Fund, UNDP, Australia Aid, Oxfam, World Vision, Lions Club, and Rotary.
