Rebuild Kate's Small Biz After Devastating Fire

While many of us were watching the inauguration unfold, a beloved small business in Boone, NC was in flames.

On January 20, 2021 our dear friend Kate Kryder's business, Wild Juniper Cabin, experienced a fire of unknown origin and burned to the ground. We are so grateful that no one was in the house at the time, but unfortunately the damage was so severe that absolutely nothing from the wreckage is salvageable.

After months of work and years of saving, planning, and dreaming of launching her own business, Kate opened Wild Juniper Cabin as an Airbnb in November 2020. Only two months later, this dream was in ashes.

Kate is an artist, activist, and champion of supporting local. A major part of Kate's mission and business plan is focused on shopping small, championing other women-owned businesses, and supporting the Wautauga county economy.

She took great care to stock the home with local food, partner with 10 other local small businesses to keep the cabin as locally and ethically-sourced as possible, and to create a space where friends and family could gather to make lasting memories. She also created jobs for locals like cleaning the space and tending to the grounds, while developing a way to support her own family.

With the loss of Wild Juniper not only goes the loss of Kate's dream, but the loss of income for her and the others she had hired to run aspects of the cabin.

Even though the house is gone, Kate is still responsible for a monthly mortgage. And because of Kate's incredible heart and social responsibility, she is committed to continuing to pay the local staff who are now out of work. While her insurance will cover some of the loss, rebuilding the house will cost far more than her policy will cover.

As Kate's friends and fellow women-owned businesses, we are inspired by her strength, resilience, and attitude. Kate is determined to rebuild Wild Juniper - but she needs our help! Please consider making a donation to support a small, woman-owned business.
