WILD SALMON CARAVAN – Celebrate the Spirit of Wild Salmon through the arts, culture and heritage!
MAY 10th - 14th, 2015 from Prince George to Victoria, BC
The Wild Salmon Caravan was born out of an idea that spawned from the Wild Salmon Convergence Gathering in October 2014 organized by Dawn Morrison of the BC Food Systems Network Working Group on Indigenous Food Sovereignty and Janice Billy of the Neskonlith Secwepemc community. The planning group for the caravan developed a schedule of dates and stop over places. The Caravan’s goal is to inspire, encourage and support a convergence of efforts to save wild salmon from industrial harm, as well as celebrate the magnificence of the spirit of wild salmon. This will be done through drumming and singing, music (rap/guitar/flute), story telling, artwork, community dinners, ceremony, rallies and poetry. Through this, we will send messages to government and industry that environmental protection measures are of the highest priority to protect wild salmon from harmful practices of fish farms, mining, big oil, fracking, dams, and others. More announcements, press releases and posters will be sent out very soon.
This is a call for action and support of the Wild Salmon Caravan. We are calling on everyone to join the caravan and ask that you and/or your family, community or organization provide financial or logistical support in one or more of the following ways.
· Financial support and fundraising for the cost of travel, sound equipment, tents, food, promotional materials, etc…
· Printing and/or distributing promotional materials
· Creating and contributing artistic expressions of the spirit of wild salmon. i.e. visual and performing arts, culture and heritage
· Mobilize your communities to join in the convergence as it passes through your region
· Plan tie in rallies & ceremonies
· Host community feasts and public speakers along the route of the caravan
***As a people’s movement, we need volunteer regional coordinators, and donations towards bus/van rentals are of highest priority. For more information, please go to: tinyurl.com/WildSalmonCaravan. We acknowledge the generous contribution of $2,500 from the Mennonite Jubulee Fund and we seek a champion to match this grant! All donations big or small will make enhance the success of the Wild Salmon Caravan!
