NYIT Sag Harbor Thesis Studio (FA 24-SP 25)
Donation protected
This fundraising effort is part of the final year thesis within the BArch program at NYIT led by Professor Dongsei Kim. Ten thesis students from the architecture program engaged a local community led by Ronald Reed, an architect who is also a Planning board member for the Village of Sag Harbor. Students worked with local stakeholders in Fall 23 and Spring 24 to produce a comprehensive plan for the future of Sag Harbor.
Here are some of the results of this studio from last year, assisted by the donations:
“Envisioning a Resilient Sag Harbor” (Fall 2023 – Spring 2024) was a year-long architectural design thesis studio at New York Tech’s School of Architecture and Design led by Prof. Dongsei Kim. Students advised by Prof. Kim investigated current issues of Sag Harbor to propose its more resilient future in close collaboration with Ronald Reed, a local architect, artist, and a member of its Planning Board. Together, students crafted forward-thinking proposals to ensure a more resilient and sustainable future for Sag Harbor. The students’ year-long research and design proposal results were presented to Sag Harbor’s public on Thursday, May 9, at the Sage Hall, Sag Harbor, NY.

The funding have covered expenses for trips (a 2-hour drive from the NYIT campus) throughout the two semesters, materials for physical site model making, plotting large-scale drawings for three local community presentations and final exhibition at a local venue, light meals for the site visits. The additional collected funds will be utilized in such a way again this year and also contribute to a summary publication compiling the work of the last two years.
Students will continue interacting with the Village of Sag Harbor's Board of Trustees and Planning Board members, local stakeholders such as the Bay Street Theather & Sag Harbor Center of the Arts, and other local business owners, artists, architects, and residents.
The studio aims to envision a resilient and innovative future using the 17 Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) framework for the Village of Sag Harbor, Long Island. Students will closely work with the local community stakeholders to explore the role of the architect, architecture, and urban design in negotiating the push and pull of progress and NIMBYism.
We appreciate your support!
*The final thesis publication in Spring 2024 will recognize all donors' names.
