Support Prism Analog: Keep the Music Alive

Tax deductible
Hello! My name is Elise Bird and I am a senior at The University of Southern Maine. For my senior internship I was lucky enough to score a spot at Prism Analog, a Non-profit, Community Recording Studio in Portland Maine. Nick Johnson, the founder and Executive Director and Joni Elfers, the primary Audio Engineer, have been diligent with their efforts to educate me on the nuances of analog recording.

The studio was founded in 2016 to provide affordable analog (tape) recording to Portland-area music makers. It soon evolved to provide performance space and internships, as well as offering periodic grants for recording time. Before long, a crew of like-minded volunteers enabled Prism to move from East Bayside to the Downtown Arts district, where it’s been operating since 2019. Now Prism Analog provides part time employment to engineering staff and has expanded services to include tape preservation and electronics repair.

The studio is, unfortunately, barely afloat financially in this time of economic uncertainty. However, the passion Nick, Joni, and engineers Miles and Colby have for the studio is clear. With a long list of beautiful, original recording equipment, instruments, recording space and super affordable recording prices, Prism Analog is an incredible place to learn and create.

Prism Analog is a 501(c)(3) non-profit organization that puts all its income back into the studio. Last year over 50 bands performed at Prism during local shows, and another 30 bands recorded at the studio. This community driven-passion is what keeps Prism alive.

However the issue lies in the prices of rent, the cost of living and the cost to keep the lights on and the place warm. Nick and Joni, and others through the years, have poured love, sweat, tears and probably blood into Prism to keep it running. I have witnessed two, long and difficult months of this effort, but the diligence and confidence both of them continue to exude, even in these difficult times, is inspiring.

I want to be able to give back to them in exchange for the knowledge and effort in my education, but I can't do it alone. I want to be able to give others the opportunity to give back as well.

I am asking, hoping and relying on the generosity of others to help me reach my goal of $25,000 as soon as possible. All proceeds will go to Prism Analog, to assist in the rising costs of living for the next year. To give everyone some more time to problem solve and figure out a more sustainable method of acquiring funds.

Consider donating $5, $10, $20, $50 or any other amount you feel is necessary to support this cause.

If you are unable to donate, please consider sharing with others to spread the word!

Thank You for reading this message and Thank You in advance for your donation and generosity.
