Funeral Expenses for Jose Humberto Rivera

Jose Humberto Rivera - many of you may know him as the director of CLUES in Austin.  Jose has served our community faithfully for many years.   You may also know him for his work as an interpreter within the school district, or have met him at one of several banks in Austin.   (Look below to see this story in Spanish: Mira abajo para encontrar la historia en español.)

Jose began having breathing issues in October of 2019.  He was in and out of the hospital and on various medications for a rare and severe type of pneumonia known as cryptogenic organizing pneumonia.  Despite the hospital stays and the best efforts of doctors here, Jose was put on a ventilator at Mayo in Rochester.

The doctors informed Jose that the only way for him to live was if he had a lung transplant.  Miraculously, he was accepted into the country's best lung transplant hospital, Duke, in North Carolina.  He was transferred by helicopter this January.

Unfortunately, Jose is still living on a ventilator and currently sedated in the hospital waiting for his transplant.  He will hopefully be receiving the transplant the first week of February as the details of his post-operative care are worked out.  His lack of family in the U.S. makes his home community of Austin, MN so much more vital.  

Jose will need round-the-clock, 24 hour care for three to four months following his transplant.  A man from the local hispanic Baptist church (Primera Iglesia Bautista) - Ismael Garcia Rojas - has volunteered to take the necessary four months out of his own life to travel to NC to care for Jose.  However, Jose will need to stay in NC for up to a year - and of course, neither man will be working as his care will be 24 hours a day for the first four months.  We are raising money to help cover the cost of housing, meals, medication, travel to and from rehab, and other miscellaneous expenses during this recovery time.

We are hoping and praying that the community of Austin - our neighbors, our friends, our brothers and sisters - will come together to help them cover these expenses.  Jose has given SO much to our community working with CLUES - he truly is a servant of the people.  Please join with us in supporting him in his transplant and recovery.  We truly appreciate all of your prayers and financial gifts for our friend, Jose.

José comenzó a tener problemas respiratorios en octubre de 2019. Estaba entrando y saliendo del hospital y tomando varios medicamentos para un tipo raro y grave de neumonía conocida como neumonía organizada criptogénica. A pesar de las estadías en el hospital y los mejores esfuerzos de los médicos aquí, José fue puesto en un respirador en Mayo en Rochester.

 

Los doctores le informaron a José que la única forma de vivir para él era si tenía un trasplante de pulmón. Milagrosamente, fue aceptado en el mejor hospital de trasplantes de pulmón del país, Duke, en Carolina del Norte. Fue trasladado en helicóptero este enero.

 

Desafortunadamente, José todavía vive con un ventilador y actualmente está sedado en el hospital esperando su trasplante.
