So what a year 2020 has been so far! We've all had to contend with missing friends and family, worrying about the health of loved ones, stressing over our livelihoods and waiting impatiently for this to be over. But what if you were to find out it would never be over? Well that's what has happened to one local Wickford family....
In August, after a sudden bout of stomach pain, the Bucknole family were hit with the devastating diagnosis that Dad, Jay, had Pancreatic Cancer. At first there was hope that the tumour could be removed, however, the prognosis changed rapidly when it was found the cancer had spread to the lymph nodes. Finally, the family were told that the cancer was terminal with a life expectancy of 12 to 18 months. A fit, lively, life loving 48 year old self-employed plumber was having to come to terms with the thought of not living beyond the age of 50. The families hearts were broken....
There are approximately 10,000 new pancreatic cases in the UK every year, which has risen over the last decade and is predicted to continue rising. Sadly, it also has a very high death rate, owing to the fact it is often detected late due to no, or hard to detect, symptoms. Only 2.1% of UK cancer research spend is directed towards pancreatic cancer annually....
It has been so difficult to witness the pain and suffering this has caused to the family but their strength in dealing with such a horrific situation has been and continues to be admirable. Jay's wife, Jemma, who has dedicated her work to teaching and entertaining babies and toddlers as an award winning Hartbeeps Imaginator will no longer be able to do the job she loves whilst her husband undergoes 6+ months of intensive chemotherapy. Their son, Archie, is having to comprehend the illness to his beloved Dad whilst beginning his secondary school education. There really is little for this fun loving family to look forward to right now....
In a matter of weeks, Jay and Jemma have gone from both working, earning and maintaining the family home budget to having no income whatsoever. At a time like this, the family should be thinking about making memories in the time they have left. Using the good days that Jay has throughout his cancer treatment to try and put smiles on their faces. Try to create a home environment suitable for Jay to live out the life he has remaining post treatment as comfortably and enjoyably as possible....
