HONORING THE LIFE AND LEGACY OF SAILING LEGEND -
CAPTAIN WILLIAM "BILL" PINKNEY
Captain Bill Pinkney became world renown when he completed his solo sail around the world via the 5 Great Capes in 1992; making him the First Black Man to accomplish this challenging voyage alone. Among his many other accomplishments, he was the first Captain of the replica freedom revolt ship Amistad, and was also inducted into the National Sailing Hall of Fame.
On August 31, 2023 Captain Pinkney completed his life's journey here on earth.
In honor of a man who did so much to inspire so many to reach for their dreams, a memorial celebration was held at the DuSable Museum in Chicago on November 4, 2023. The celebration was hosted by the "Friends of Captain Bill Pinkney Committee". This extraordinary event highlighted the life of this remarkable man with video presentations, fun and memorable stories told by friends and fellow sailors, remarks by public figures and a heart touching commentary by his wife, Migdalia. However, this was not all, in order to follow Captain Pinkney's wish to have his home-going to be just as he lived his life...fun and uplifting, the celebration was just that! Following the memorial service, the Jackson Park Yacht Club continued the celebration with a live band, food, beverages and the opportunity for friends and fellow sailors to mingle, chat, laugh and share memories...just as Captain Bill wanted.
To continue honoring Captain Pinkney's Life and Legacy, friends of Captain Pinkney and his wife Migdalia, created a non-profit corporation -
The Captain William "Bill" Pinkney Legacy Foundation.
Our goal is to continue Captain Pinkney's passion of inspiring children and adults to achieve their goals. His motto of:
"If You Have A Dream... And Believe, Prepare, And Never Quit, Your Dream Can Become Real" serves as an inspiration for all of us
