Help Support Karou's Double Knee Surgery

Donación protegida
Hi, my name is Diane Hwangpo, and I am currently working at Veterinary Emergency Group (Boston) as a veterinary assistant. I created this GoFundMe not for myself but for an unfortunate case that came into my hospital today as a patient.

Karou, a 6-month-old Alaskan Malamute, came to our hospital unable to utilize his back legs entirely. He was brought in by someone who was an acquaintance of his former owners. She is an EMT who brought him to our emergency facility after working a 16-hour shift. She did so because Karou's old owners essentially dropped him off as a surrender to her, claiming that they no longer wanted to care for him as he had become a burden. Upon further examination by one of our veterinarians, it was evident that he was clearly in pain and unable to support himself on his back legs. She suggested radiographs, which I took with a coworker after giving him pain medication to aid him in orthopedic radiographs (as it often involves the manipulation of the limbs, which can result in pain and discomfort). Unfortunately, the radiographs revealed a heartbreaking sight - both his right and left knees were broken. Despite the obvious pain he was in, as evidenced by the yelping during the completion of these radiographs, he has been nothing but sweet and gentle during his time with us at the hospital.

Due to the severity of his injuries, he requires surgery to maintain a high quality of life. Should he not receive surgery, the only other option is euthanasia. Unfortunately, our hospital is not suited to conduct specialty care, and we referred him to BluePearl in Waltham to receive an orthopedic consultation and a possible quote for surgery. At this time, the estimate for his surgery is anywhere from $10000-$12000 because both of his knees are fractured. Karou's friend, who brought him in, has stated that she would be able to contribute $2000 for his care. This is incredibly generous, considering she was not responsible for him before today and already has another dog.

While I work in an emergency hospital and see tragic cases every day, Karou's has left a mark on my heart. He is only six months old and has a whole life he could live - complete with running and exploring should he receive this knee surgery. Karou never asked to be abused or neglected yet has remained kind and gentle. Although he is in pain, he has not snapped or attempted to bite any of our coworkers. This speaks to his outstanding temperament and the potential he holds to be a fantastic dog.

I have a miniature Australian Shepherd named Bentley, who I rescued from a case of neglect around the same age as Karou. While it was an extensive process rehabilitating him, it has been nothing but a reward to see him smile every day or chase his favorite ball at the park. I believe every dog should have the opportunity to experience love in their life, especially such a gentle and young soul such as Karou. As someone beginning veterinary school this fall at Cornell, I want to embrace the morals that I have grown up with and ensure that I extend the empathy and love towards my animals to every patient or pet I encounter.

The sooner he gets the surgery, the better his quality of life. Karou needs this surgery, and he deserves the right to experience a long life filled with treats, love, and adventures. Every dog does and I would not be able to sleep at night if I didn't try for Karou.

The good samaritan that took him in has offered to contribute $2000-3000 towards the cause, and I believe we all have it in our hearts to raise the $9000 that could transform Karou's life.
