Help Oliver to ride ‘his’ red trike...
“I get my bike tomorrow mum?”
They said he’d never stand, get around easily and certainly, never walk...
But they didn’t know our Oliver!
Oliver was born 10 week early with hydrocephalus, 2 types of spina bifida; one of which being the most severe, fixed talipes (also know as ‘club feet’) and numerous other medical ‘issues’. To date he’s had in excess of 20 operations and will have more to come sadly.
Despite being paralysed from the waist down, Oliver’s found his own way of getting around both in and out of his wheelchair. He has learned how to climb onto chairs, sofas etc and can even get up and down the stairs. He can pull himself up into a standing position and by using predominantly his hips, propel himself forward in his walking frame albeit very slow... at the moment!
Now he’s decided he wants to ride a (red) bike just like his peers do.
Not only would this be a wonderful gift for him, it will also help to build leg muscles and help enormously with his overall physical health and well-being.
Oliver is the most social, happy, contented, determined and inspirational 4 year old you could ever meet. He has strong will power, a ‘can do’ attitude and strives for independence.
Obviously Oliver will never be able to ride a standard bike but he could ride a trike. He has tried a ‘tomcat’ trike and successfully rode it both with and without (for a short while), help. Due to the unique design, Oliver was able to self propel the trike using his own legs. See the video above.
