On December 3rd, 2020, on her way to work as a nurse practitioner, Harriet Kay was in a devastating automobile accident. Harriet was hit head on, needed to be cut out of her car, and was clear enough to tell the EMTs she was bleeding internally and needed immediate intervention. At that moment, Harriet became one member of the extensive team that saved her life. Harriet's injuries included fractures of her ribs, femurs, pelvis, right humerous, left clavicle, left wrist and sternum. Additionally, she suffered arterial dissection, liver laceration, severe injury to her bowel, and bilateral collapsed lungs. Harriet underwent multiple surgeries and fought to stay alive for many days in the ICU.
That Harriet is alive is nothing short of a miracle. But for those of us that know Harriet, she has always been a miracle. Harriet started wearing prosthetics at 18 months old and has been a bilateral amputee since before her first birthday- all secondary to a birth defect. Despite her disability, she has always been fiercely independent and enormously capable. Earlier in 2020, she was frustrated by a necessary "revision" surgery on her left leg so that she would be able to get back into her prothesis. That was due to happen December 5th, two days after this horrific accident.
Currently, Harriet is once again demonstrating her amazing resiliency and determination at an acute rehab hospital in Augusta. The EXTENSIVE CHALLENGE is in what is to come. Harriet and her beloved, Franky, have a long road ahead of them.
Harriet intends to make a full recovery. In the months ahead, Harriet's nursing needs and medical expenses will be EXTENSIVE. We are asking for your support. Prayers carried her out of the ICU, financial support will get her through an intense recovery. Harriet has dedicated her career to helping the terminally ill, the traumatized and those struggling with the disease of addiction- arguably the most vulnerable among us. She has given her heart and soul to a career of service. Harriet now needs our help, as she is vulnerable and in need, through no fault of her own.
