HELP GIVE MY SISTER HER FREEDOM BACK!

Donation protected
In May 2023, my sister’s life changed in an instant. She was rushed to hospital after experiencing extreme pain and swelling in both legs. Despite clear symptoms, she wasn’t diagnosed for two days—she was told she was “too young to have a blood clot.” But when the scans finally came back, the doctors at Queen Elizabeth Hospital were shocked. She had suffered two massive blood clots in the iliac veins leading to her IVC (the main vein in the abdomen), a condition so severe that medical staff said it was the largest clot they had ever seen.

The delay in diagnosis resulted in long-term damage. Since then, she has battled Post-Thrombotic Syndrome, chronic pain, reduced circulation, and limited mobility, lost her job as a domestic and a hca worker at QEHB, and was unable to finish her masters degree at Derby University for drama therapy and being unable to return due to "health and safety - with her being in a wheelchair". Despite ongoing treatment, her condition has left her wheelchair-bound. She now relies on a powered mobility wheelchair to get around—but she hasn’t let it stop her determination to live independently, and enjoy life as fully as possible.

Sadly, her challenges didn’t stop there.

A few weeks ago, her car—her lifeline to independence—was hit from behind in an accident. The damage rendered it unsafe and un-drivable. Because she now uses a powered wheelchair, she needs a specially adapted vehicle with space for her chair. Unfortunately, she cannot access a new car through the motability Scheme because her mobility allowance is currently tied up in the finance agreement for her wheelchair.

We are now trying to raise funds to pay off her wheelchair so she can apply for a vehicle that fits her needs. A mobility car would give her:

• The ability to attend medical appointments without relying on others
• The freedom to visit friends and family
• Access to work and volunteering opportunities
• Independence to live a full and dignified life

This fundraiser will go toward clearing the outstanding balance on her powered wheelchair, so she can apply for a suitable vehicle that allows her to travel freely, safely, and without pain or fear.

We know times are hard, but every single donation, no matter the size, brings her one step closer to regaining her freedom. Even if you can’t donate, sharing this page could help reach someone who can.

Thank you for reading her story and supporting her journey. With your help, we can give her the chance to move forward with confidence and independence.

From the bottom of our hearts—thank you.

Common Signs of a Blood Clot in Young Women:

  • Pain and Swelling in the Leg
This is one of the most common signs. If one leg is swollen, red, or painful, it could indicate a clot. It might feel like cramping, tenderness, or heaviness.

  • Warmth and Redness in the Affected Area (Can also be cold!)
The skin around the clot may feel warmer than usual, and you might notice redness or a rash over the affected area.

  • Unexplained Shortness of Breath
If you suddenly feel short of breath, dizzy, or lightheaded without an obvious cause, it could be a sign that a clot has traveled to your lungs, causing a pulmonary embolism. This is a medical emergency.

  • Chest Pain or Discomfort
Pain in the chest, particularly when breathing deeply or when you cough, could be a sign of a clot in the lungs. If it’s sharp or sudden, seek medical help immediately.

  • Swollen, Blue, or Pale Skin
When blood flow is blocked, the skin can turn blue or pale. If you notice a change in the color of your leg or arm, it could indicate that blood is not circulating properly.

Independence starts with mobility - lets make a difference today!
