Help Eat Local Huron Rebuild After Fire

A Tragic Fire, a destroyed building, and a loss impacting more than 30 farmers and local families.

Eat Local Huron is a new, non-profit, organization dedicated to connecting Huron County (Ontario) residents with local farmers and food producers through a grocery delivery service. Our mission has been to vitalize a local food culture, enhance our environment, and meaningfully contribute to our local economy. We launched less than a month ago to a wonderful response from customers and producers. A lot of excitement was brewing, a lot of blood sweat and tears had come to fruition. Then tragedy struck.

On Tuesday morning, September 7th, our General Manager Courtney Lang was working at our headquarters, when she smelled smoke. Courtney got safely out of the building, and called for help. An electrical fire quickly tore through the ceiling, decimating the newly renovated warehouse that we'd worked months preparing. Thankfully, no one was injured. We lost our warehouse, all of our equipment, and a substantial stockpile of products gathered from our producers. And our Eat Local community lost their access to local food.

We are still in shock about this but we're determined to move forward and rebuild as quickly as possible because we know that Eat Local Huron works, and we know what it means for the people of this county. The last year and a half has presented unimaginable challenges to our local food producers, and we can't lose this vital life line.

What will this money be used for? Recovering the total loss of funds that we had so recently used to renovate our warehouse, allowing us to rebuild when we find a new location.
